I celebrated my first SS retirement check(s) by buying myself a CRK 'Umnumzaan'. "Oh, for me? I shouldn't have! Really... I'm not worthy." Seriously - perfection is approached graphically asymptotically. You can get pretty good way down the graph. A case in point - a Buck 110. Great value, especially a standard one from WallyWorld - <$30 inc s/t! You could have fifteen of them for what my 'zaan cost. Certainly, the CRK is closer to perfection. Ah, and how cool is it to open lunch - Ramen Noodles - with a real CRK? Sadly, I'll entrust opening the Ken-L-Ration can to my old $20 SAK's can opener. Lots of menu combo's possible - perhaps noodles & dog food - flavored by a salsa packet from Taco Smell - hmmm, a Sunday casserole! But... I have a CRK!
Seriously - you can get decent user-knives without applying for a bail-out. Kershaws, that Ken Onion series, Chive, Scallion, Leek, etc, is a value, as are the Junk Yard Dog series. The best buy I know of, if he still has any examples, is the JYDII in Ti & SG-2 - blemished examples were <$100 shipped - and it's a keeper. Of course, Spyderco and Benchmade make some great values, too. The BM 755 MPR and 790 Subrosa from last year are especially nice - and as different as night is from day. Want a basic 'slippie'? Bucks are great - but classics, like German-made carbon steel Boker Tree Brand models, are still available reasonably. Victorinox SAK's are still good values.
As has been said - we need more info as to the criteria before offering a definitive answer - what say you, old OP??

PS No dogs here - cats only. Canned cat food is nasty. SPAM gets old...
