What is the big deal about Chris Reeve?

Here's your bolt cutter. Post #7 in the thread.

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/294569-110-Stories
I have owned a 110 way back and they were decent knives. I have never owned a sebenza, someday I will, but can guarantee they are of the highest quality you can get.

Sitting around talking crap about what you do or do not like is getting no where fast.

People like fords and hate Chevys, or vice versa. It's all a matter of preference. But no matter what, you cannot deny that the sebenza is made with the highest craftsmanship.

I don't find the knives appealing to me so it is easy for me to ridicule their unusual names, but I have no way to say anything negative about the quality and I don't doubt that they are made very well. As for being worth the price, that is up to the buyer. Everybody has their own price range that they are comfortable with and if someone wants to buy a CRK knife that is strictly up to them.

Why would you need to cut a bolt with a knife? My Sebenza slices perfectly, and that's all I need it to do. Why did I but one? Because I wanted it, and I could, and I enjoy a quality well made tool that lasts me a long time. I also like the minimalist design, that's a matter of personal taste.

You've said "I like buck. I don't like CR." about 15 times on this thread, and seem to think that holds some value to anyone, it doesn't. I don't know why you wouldn't choose to add something informative to the discussion instead of continuously repeating an a baseless opinion.

All u guys keep repeating the same shit also. Its a dead thread. I'll post my pix when I get time, I have never seen anyone drop to such grade school levels in a discussion. Alotta other ppl agree also. Y'all have more money than since. What r u gonna do if u loose it? Go spend another 2 3 4 hundred dollars on another knife. Lol as for now I'm done reading this crap

I'm currently selling every knife I own apart from two. Just so I can afford a CRK. I have looked at high end knives in the past and thought I'd be satisfied with much less. Well I wasn't. Then onto the nicer production makers and I bought a couple Benchmades. Traded one and selling the other. One just wasn't my taste and the other one was nice but just wasn't all that.

So why CRK? I have a thing for simple. Autos have springs that fail. Axis locks do too. But a frame lock should out live me... Then again I think they have very aesthetically pleasing designs. With any luck I'll never need the warranty but I hear its second to none.

And truthfully its not that expensive when you break it down.

For those wondering the two I'm keeping are my buck 110 because its still one of my favorite knives. And the other is a tbt-01. And that's just because I like it.

Moral of my story is the sebenza has been in production for over 20 years and is still highly sought after so I'm willing to roll the dice on one. Or maybe an umnumzaan. Or a 21 large. Or a 25.

X2. My point exactly.

When something catches the eye, it fuels the mind with excitement.
So it is, when something visually spectacular comes along, it gets noticed.
Crk, burst into the knife scene back in the day when survival knives were all the rage.
If I got it correctly, South African knife makers like mr reeves,
were especially noted for making top notch knives for crack SA military units.
And to me at least,
This was how crk gained its foothold in knifedom
via its reputed military use (privately purchased or otherwise).
Personally, I find his fixed blades are a bigger deal than his folders.
But then, it's only because I know what I want in a blade
Based Solely on my purpose...
Just as surely, as to why his folders would be such a big deal to many others out there.

I tell all my non knife nut friends That 400 for a knife that I carry everyday and use at least five times a day for years is just as acceptable to me as buying a gun that either you never carry or maybe shoot once an awhile. I'm a knife nut job have been since I was little I have been in trouble at every school I ever attended for carrying a knife including 2nd grade with a boy scout knife. Knives are my thing I love them you think 400 is a lot I spent $1,700 on a MS Bill Burke pronghorn only to find I did not like it. Just as much work goes into a custom knife or high end production knife as making a quality gun especially high end folders. $400 thats less than my monthly auto gas bill to drive to job sites. You don't think about 400 for a gun that sits in a safe most of its life but a knife is crazy at 400 when you use it every day. $400 is less than one month of my truck payment. If your happy with you less expensive knife great some of us aren't we find them wanting and lacking in quality. And we see the value of owning one knife that last a life time. I dont want a box of $40 knives I only want one great one and I have one my sebenza 25.

Well said!

I like the quality of the Sebenza and the design. Customer service if needed is also excellent and I love framelocks. It is a very dependable knife and easy to maintain. IMHO they are well worth the money and recommend at least handling one if not trying one out. Once you have one and use one you begin to see what these are all about. If you find they aren't for you sell it-there is always a good market for them. They aren't for everyone, but many have found them to be excellent knives that work very well in an EDC capacity. If you find they aren't for you there are plenty of other good makers out there, but they are well worth a try. You may find your knife for life as many have.

I'll pass......dropping 400 bones on a knife is a little too much when you have priorities and a family to feed, I have to invest my money into my equipment and tools that cost hundreds of dollars because I'm self employed....only if I won the lottery I would consider paying that much for a knife.

I know right lol. I got his feathers ruffled. But seriously I don't like crk at all. I like my bucks, my dad and grandpa used them with no issues for years and years. The old traditional is made so well. Some of this new stuff is crap.

Lol..... ok?

I would hardly call CRK crap. If you're fine with sticking to using your bucks, then so be it. But yours is not the only right way

Good to know........

Comparing knife brands is like comparing any other big name brands for ANY product. People like what they like....period. If people are happy with a $40 buck 110, so be it. If people are happy with a $400 sebenza, so be it. If people are happy with a $3000 William Henry Knife, so be it. Everyone has different likes, needs, etc. I personally have owned most brands of knives out there. Buck, Schrade, Western, Case, Kershaw, Puma, CRK, Hinderer, Strider, Bob Dozier, William Henry, Bladetech, just to name a few. Guess what, they ALL have edges and Cut.....!!! When I was younger, I had a buck 110. Was happy with it and carried it for years. Then I went spent which seemed like a fortune on a Kershaw 1050, which is basically a Buck 110 on steroids....!!! Kept going up till I reached for what seemed like the stars at the time and bought my first CRK. That happened to be a One Piece Knife. After owning several of those, I figured if the sebenza was as good as the One Piece Knife, I would like it. Well not only did I like it, I loved it. Unless you hold one, you really have no idea what perfection feels like. Once I got to the top of the mountain, I tried Strider, Hinderer, William Henry, Doziers. Striders for me personally are horrible. The 3 I had all had lock issues and uneven grinds and there is NO customer service. Hinderer was excellent in all regards. William Henry are nice, but more gentleman like and not nearly as heavy duty as even the weakest sebenza. Dozier, well I had an issue with one, and I actually had to pay for the repair, even though it was shipped new to me flawed. That lost my business for sure. But all in all, no matter what I have tried, I still always come back to CRK. I am at the point where its CRK all the way for me. I have sold nearly all others to fund more. I have owned 101 CRK to date. Yes you read that right.....!!! Do I still have that many, heck no. Sold some over the years. Still have a healthy collection though and all I can say is I never plan to sell another. Have I bought every single one NEW, no way. I look for deals just like everyone else............There is no reason to sit here and TROLL like some of you are doing. If you love BUCK knives, then so be it and stick to them. They are great knives for the $$. For me, the older bucks did not hold an edge at all. Its something family and friends have complained about for years. I have several of them, 110, 112, special, skinner, etc. I have a kalinga that I carried for several years and it was pretty sweet, one of my all time favorites. What knocked it from my hunting belt....? A CRK Ubejane.......................And since it was mentioned, Yes, I have lost a CRK, a beautiful Large 21 sebenza with silver dog paws. Yes, I am still sick over it. Was $485. I still pray I find it and its just misplaced, but after almost a year of looking, I have all but given up. I am just far more careful now and even more pocket aware now because of it.

ALL knives we carry have special meaning to us. I had a little spyderco pro grip that my ex wife threw away out of spite. Got it for $35 on SMKW. But I loved that little guy. Bought one to replace it years later, but it never held the place that one did..........Again, I miss the 21 I lost. It had special meaning, thats why I carried it.

CRK is where its at for those of us that have been fortunate to own one or more. For those that prefer others, by all means. Just no reason to Troll, make rude comments, put people down for liking so. Again, to each their own.....!!!

This is the greatest knife forum on the internet....PERIOD....!!! Lets act like it....!!!

I've owned my fair share of knives and I believe I have a good understanding of what makes a quality knife.
Sebenzas are the top tier of production knives. Its the incredible fit and finish plus the simplistic design together
that make it a hall of fame blade. True its a lot of money for a lot of people but your not paying just for a name
with CRK. Your paying for attention to detail, materials and great customer service. Its money well spent, trust me.
Like with anything else if you don't have first hand experience with something than hold judgement until you do.

I Own a large sabenza and a umnumzan.
Along with lots of other knives.
Are chris reeve knives worth it?Absolutely
It's a pride of ownership thing. Like owning a corvette or a Harley Davidson.
They are not for everyone but they are fun to own.
I would cut anything with my chris reeve that I would cut with any of my other knives and not worry a bit about it.
They are built to be one of the best edc knives you can buy.
So it just comes down to personal preference again

The BUCK 110 is the most copied knife in history, as well as one of the most well made sturdy etc. But u can get a normal ole work one for 40 ish. . Ppl don't go gonzo over them, because they have spoken for themselves. Chris Reeves knives are showey pretty boy knives imo.

Buck 110 is a heavy weak design. I tried one just to snap cut small brush off my hiking trails and it was loose in four directions in 15 minutes. The knife has a tiny threadless pin, set in soft brass. There's nothing about the knife or design that's strong and heavy duty. An old design that's been vastly surpassed, by modern technology is what the 110 really is. It's been copied over the years because it was about the only choice, in a large locking folder when it first came out and remained so for many years. It's really laughable when people make claims there's nothing stronger, in a locking folder today.

I noticed that the 110 get's loose when it's used hard sometimes but the blade play is easily fixable even if you didn't have the proper tools at the time to fix it ,All you would've had to do is hit the pivot area of the brass bolster with the butt of a large branch and it stops the blade play.
