What is the big problem about throwing RAT's??

Why is it that a lot of folks seem to get uptight about throwing a RAT knife?? Seems to me if a person purchases a knife and wants to throw it they can, after all it is their knife. Personaly I really enjoy throwing my knives and batoning them is a load of fun as well. To date my only RAT is an Izula, I do want to pick up an RC-3 but am a little turned off when I read threads where everyone is putting down a fellow for throwing his knife.

Kinda seems that the group census is that RAT knives are tough as nails, survival knives but don't throw them.

Just looking for a little clarity here.

:)

I'd say go for it. Throw those puppies all you want; after all, they're your knives. Of course, when the tip breaks and the scales come lose, you'll know why you shouldn't throw good knives, a painful lesson I learned at an early age (learned it for myself, cause I didn't listen to anybody else).

I just don't think that is what they were designed for, and I'm pretty sure that when your knife is your survival tool throwing it doesn't serve much purpose. But by all means throw it, I don't give a crap one way or the other.

No knife is made for throwing except some special made throwing knives.
So its not only rat knives that are thrown but all knife brands.

Most will learn the hard way that its not a good idea and will stop after they destroy their knives:).

The more expensive the knife the harder the lesson will be:D.

I guess my thought is that when I throw a knife I know I am taking the risk of damaging it, although I do enjoy throwing my knives if it breaks I know it is my fault. I believe most people that throw their knives assume the risk and would be honest enough to buy a new one rather than turn it in for a warranty with the exception of a few bad eggs.

I don't think it is the place for people to jump down someones throat when they post about their knife. If a person wants to throw it, why does the crowd care so much??

Throwing knives is for girls.:p

Your right, if a person pays for a knife, they should be allowed to throw it.

That said, this forum and it's premise is about alot more than just the knives.

Were, for the most part, survival minded folks and from that particular standpoint, throwing a knife is about the worst idea out there.

We take care in a survival situation not to dull our edge, to fashion tools with the knife first as not to use up it's edge too fast, and most importantly, not to lose our most important tool.

Throwing a knife at best risks it hitting a rock or other hard object, breaking off the point or otherwise decreasing it's abilities, cutting or otherwise.

At worst it risks loss of the blade.

I have no problem with folks throwing knives. Heck, I do it sometimes. It's your knife, do what you want with it. However, if somebody throws their knife and it breaks, and they expect the warranty to cover it- that can become a problem. If enough chuckleheads do that, it could force RAT to reconsider their warranty. Which is something nobody wants.

Doesn't bother me. It's their stuff. They paid for it. I would hope that they won't try to send it in for warranty or anything, not saying that they would, just saying. As far as I'm concerned, people can do whatever they want. Now on the flip side, if I ever find out that anyone threw a knife that I made, I'll drive to their house and beat their ass, but production knives, hell, do whatever you want. You bought it.

Edit: On a side note. I have a bunch of throwing knives. I think throwing knives are fun. I just recently made targets out of some big round slices of pine. I'm not going to throw one of my good knives, but I sure do like throwing sh#tty ones.

I'm only guessing here but it may have something to do with the few bad eggs which you spoke of. It seems RAT forum folks are pretty protective of Jeff, Mike, etc (even though they don't need it) and they would hate to see the "bad eggs" take advantage of RAT's wonderful warranty.

It just may be that the crowd doesn't care so much if you want to break your knives and pay for replacements — they're just trying to spare you the cost and aggravation. It's not just RATs that probably shouldn't be thrown, it's any decent knife. When you throw a knife it doesn't always hit perfectly. Often it will strike — and stick — with a sideways twist that can snap your blade. That can easily snap the tip (the most vulnerable part) of a hardened blade. Aside from that, the repeated pounding can wreak havoc on the handle.

There are a lot of knives made of softer steel that are meant for throwing, and they're usually pretty inexpensive, too.

But, hey, it's your knife: do what you want.

This is very helpful, thank you!!

I got a hunting knife from my Dad as a young man and threw it until the handles fell off. Then in the Marines,I threw my Kabar until that broke. That was 25 years ago,I don't throw my knives anymore. But hey, whatever floats your boat.Perhaps,I was just a lousy knife thrower.

Well, I believe the thing about wanting to buy a RC blade to throw, is some of the people are expecting it to break, therefore they want to abuse the warranty if breakage occurs. That is just my thoughts, but it seems logical that is why they want to throw a RC blade.

Yeah I would hope if some one threw a rat that they wouldn't try to get it replaced thru warrenty. If the warrenty is abused to much Jeff could pull it, and all though I wouldn't try to break a rat you never know what could happen.

Stick around this forum long enough and you will find threads that turn you off. There is one about a guy that had his mom smear his butt with fake tan and we crucified him. Thankfully, he took it well and didn't run off crying. If you find a thread that rubs you the wrong way, just get over it and move on to the next thread. :)
