What is the big problem about throwing RAT's??

Grump I returned that pm you sent me, And yes i have another bodybuilding comp in a about 9 wks and well i already met a lady at the club who was down to do it for me. But since you and I have such a history on here I would love to take you up on your offer of full body shaving and jantanna aplication. I will pm directions and times to appear.

Smooth move! :D

This thread brings up an interesting point ,a point I would never bring to issue by throwing but if you read the RAT Cutlery Warranty it never says anything about abuse in a negative way. However it does state if you cut your knife in half with a torch they will replace it no questions asked ,is this not abuse?? I would never send a knife in for warranty work if I had been too hard on it by throwing but when is reasonable use turning into abuse ?Some knife companies say batoning in gross abuse,I say what knife did you baton with ?I don`t understand why they would word the warranty in such a way if they didn`t expect door prying, knife throwing, brick cutting knife nuts to break some blades.I love my RATs no question, but I think people should not be so defensive and try to steer people to the light with kindness and friendship.

it's similar to your car insurance. they WILL pay to fix your car if you drive it into a tree, but what moron would drive their car into a tree just to see if they can?

in a seriousness it is about common sense. like jeff_C said you're not gonna use a screw driver as a hammer and vice versa. if people actually thought about things before they did them then they probably wouldn't even need to use the warranty.

I could give a big "Rat"s ass what you do with your Izula. Hehehaha

Very helpful....

I was simply asking why folks get so up in arms when someone throws their knife. I have recieved a lot of usefull information in this thread, along with some not so pleasent responses. All in all I am glad I asked.

Have a nice weekend one and all!!

:)

I hope I worded my post in a way that everyone understood that I was against throwing non throwing knives ,but hell when have any of us always done what was the best thing.I think everyone should be allowed to make mistakes even stupid ones ,and I hope people can be a little less unkind to noobs about doing unloving things to knives ...Also I think we all at least know someone who has had a claim on their car insurance for something that could have been avoided by better planning and care.

Besides my Izula is so tough I don`t think throwing it would even bother it unless I missed and it hit the ground.

Eh, no one is being "unkind" here. A question was asked and people gave their opinions. If you don't like the opinion that doesn't necessarily make it unkind. Just because people are new to knives doesn't give them the excuse to do stupid things with them. I personally think it's just a way for stupid (not ignorant, stupid) people to justify their dumb decisions. It's like saying you're a noob at shooting a gun and then you "accidentally" shoot someone, yeah it was stupid and there's no excuse other than the user being stupid. I fail to see any rational explanation for deliberately using tools irresponsibly.

But hey, it's your money and if you want to buy a knife and throw it that's your decision. Just like you could buy a gun and do something stupid with it, or buy a nice expensive car and wreck it so you could see how it would hold up. See a pattern here? Sorry if this seems "unkind" but I think a little harsh comment here and there is needed when there are so many people that don't see any problem with their stupid actions.

i find a lot of people confuse not being nice w/ truthful.

I think the biggest problem is that people refuse to accept that others have a right to their opinions.

People always say "never discuss politics, religion or knife throwing in polite company", but if you just accept that people aren't WRONG if they disagree with you, you can politely discuss everything and anything without conflict.

Two sides to every coin.

No matter what you believe, think, desire, love, or hate; there will be someone or several someones who feel the exact opposite as you. It's just easier to find them on a forum!

OK so I will say this because:

A.) this seems to be a question that pops up from time to time
B.) I have been a knife thrower for about 5 years now, and by a knife thrower I mean someone who "pitches" up to 4 hours almost everyday, has throwing knifes and targets and is a member of American Knife Throwers Alliance and a few other groups here in Texas and the US, also has competed in throwing Events from time to time.

so maybe I might know a few things by now... or not....:jerkit:

If you want to be any good at knife throwing buy the right knifes.
By right knifes I mean they must have the right weight balance of around 1oz per Inch. AT LEAST.
Anything less you may as well throw it into a brick wall a few times, it will mess up any knife if its
not designed for the abuse.
It hits hard. My average throw hits the target at over 50 miles per hour. I expect more force out of a noobie then that.

The ideal knife? 12" total length, about 16oz, a symmetrical blade shape, no handles or leather handles that you will replace ALLOT, dull at all but the point.

yes I have thrown other things, lawn mower blades, spikes, shovels, Ka bars, etc.
but...

The biggest thing is the tip geometry must be shaped for throwing because of the Extreme force that passes though it into the target. The average person ALWAYS whips the knife way to hard A.) watched to many movie actors "throwing" B.) they have not developed the correct form yet.

I have COMPLETELY destroyed knifes in 2 throws before, even though they were really great, well made knifes.
It sucks trying to explain to the wife/girlfriend what happened to that $100 knife when she didn't even understand why you needed it in the first place.

Also throwing any knife is dangerous, very dangerous.
Thats part of of the reason I love it but also I understood and now really understand because no matter how safe you think you are being you will get a love bite sooner or later
They bounce off a weird angles, they get stuck blade up in the grass for your feet to find, ect.
the more you throw the better you get at minimizing this but.... practice and the correct target environment.

I have split my big toe in half on bounce backs, have had around 200 stitches total before I learned better.
Getting hit with a knife sucks, don't find out like I did.
the ER is not a fun place at 2pm on a sunny Saturday, most jobs will not understand that you can't work because you where throwing knifes...ect.

I just wanna shake some sense into people, knife throwing is something I love,
its my passion.
I will always try to help people learn about it but be safe and learn on the right tools.
If anyone really wants to get started contact me and Ill help "point" you in the right direction.

Neat post. Maybe you could start a thread with recommendations for throwing knives and a good starter setup, i.e. safety considerations and technique.

In fact, I think it would be a service to post the thread here in RC- as the mods don't mind non-ratcutlery blades being shown, the thread deals with a possible survival strategy (knife throwing) and it provides the right kind of input to do it correctly.

Thanks for your post, I learned a few things from it. Hope to learn more

+1 to this.

I learned a bit from your post.

almex, that was a great post. You should really post that in the general section so more people get a wake up call. Not too long ago someone there was asking about throwing their folding knives...

Great post. Very informative. I'll admit to being tempted at times to give my RC-3 a throw now and then, it seems so sturdy. But if the scales come loose that will annoy me forever and I couldn't send it in under the warranty knowing that it was my fault for throwing them, so I pass. I do have some hibben throwing knives, but I am just a beginner and I bought the smaller version which I hear is a poor choice for someone that has not thrown knives before...

I'll Type up an off topic about throwing and post it up sometime in the next few days,
It will take a sec to write it out and get together some links for everyone to look at.

Off the top of my head

makers of some of the best throwing knifes out there, but they cost more
but I also like the Cold steel one they make now:
csstoreonline_2076_9396855

they are cheap and easy to throw also (and this is a bad thing starting out)
they come with a utility sharpened edge that I dull up with a Bastard mill file.
I have allot of the older Cold Steel throwers and they really do last.
But for some reason Cold Steel only makes one model now.

As far as the Throwing goes there are only a few books yo can get and only a couple DVDs to show you about it

Harry K. McEvoy is the Father of the modern knife throwing movement, has 2 great books that are cheap on the history and art of throwing just search Amazon

Also my Favorite book is combat knife throwing which deals with the "no-spin" style of throwing I mostly do. This is the type of throwing that would most likely work in a survival situation.
Although the way I figure it you wouldn't ever throw your last knife and a throwing stick or rock would work just as well for most folks to get small animals. The small animals get really jumpy and the throwing wind up might set them running before you can get a throw off.

The author is a really nice guy and also let someone post up clips off his video on youtube check it out.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTE8EVKJNec&feature=related

Again this is the way I throw allot but its the hardest style and you do get the knifes bouncing back at weird angles... I would says learn the classic way first and then also try the no-spin style.

Thanks for the feedback and keep you eyes peeled for the off topic
