What is the deal with spyderco?

Maybe if someone is buying a $40-60 knife to use they don't care of it's finished like a fine piece of jewlery.
Some of the more inexpensive ones do have fit and finish issues, especially the FRN models, there was a good thread on this in the Spyderco forum recently.

With the higher end ones like the Paramiliary, Military, Manix etc., there are no issues I can see. NIB edge is clean and very sharp, lockup is tight, no play, everything is even and aligned, action is smooth etc. .

Of course after just a week of use with the Manix :

1) edge has been dulled and sharpened (I do a lot of cutting)
2) primary grind looks like it lost a fight with a bag of cats
3) action is gritty as it is filled with dirt
4) handle is scratched
5) there is a nick in the spine (don't know, ask my brother)

etc. .

Flushed out the piviot and lubed with 3-in-1 good as new, don't care about the rest of it.

Most people who buy mass production knives don't spend all day inspecting them, looking for uneven grinds, etc. They could care less, it's just a knife to them.
If you use it, what difference does it make, it is only an issue on safe queens, unless we are talking about functional issues like lockup and similar, which isn't the case based on what I have seen.

This is what I always found odd about such posts, you find that arguement running alongside the "heavy user", "solid user" line, and they make no sense together. The finish element anyways, and the fit to an extent beyond a certain point.

Les Robertson made an revealing post on this years back when talking about a Brend, he remarked that as soon as he got it he scraped it across the sand to mark up the finish.

This was so he would not be concerned about using it, I always thought it was pretty odd to get it made with that level of finish detail if you were going to do that.

Mr. Stamp, you should get a Sebeneza
Cliff is fine and I bought one a week or so ago, I will be picking up a RSK and 710 shortly and running them all against a Military and Rat Tramp among others, possibly a Ka-Bar Dozier as well, depending on what comes up for sale.

Cliff,

Do they send you the same knives they send to everyone else?

As a tester, Do you order your knives on line or buy them from a shop like all of uss? Or do they send you special Spydercos? Maybe they do do send you well finished ones.

As a knife tester,
How do you get the knives you test?

Not sure if you are agreeing with me or debating me. In any event I made a typo in my post above which I have fixed, may want to read it again. :) My point about "Why Spyderco" was that the masses don't care about fit and finish and just buy a knife to use it. Spyderco makes a lot of good quality user knives at an affordable price.

No I assume they have different ones unless Sal has figured out how to access the parallel universe versions of the ones I have.

I buy most of them, some users send me thiers and some manufacturers do the same.

Just commenting on the idea in general.

I think this must be the first humorous thing I've seen you say. Well done. ;) :)

(I wonder if the intended recipient gets it. :) )

"All of us"?

Speak for yourself. The Internet is my knife shop.

I think that's true of many posters here.

Come to think of it, you're right. In the last twelve months I can think of only one knife, (Leatherman Squirt), that I've bought from an actual shop. All the rest have been online.

I did buy a Lansky system from a shop but my Sharpmaker and Edgepro were all online purchases too.

I have seen a few spyderco's and a few BMs and the BMs did not seem signifigantly better fit and finish wise. Also, when I am paying 40 for a knife, i care about function, not fit and finish. Spydero is in a different nich.

Sebenza,

As a poser, in your imagination do you order your knives on line or buy them from a shop? Or do you imagine Chris Reeve personally sending you a new custom Sebenza every week?

'Cause he doesn't have one. :D

Then what is he trying to do? Stir up commotion? In my opinion, he is actually giving CRK knives a bad name through doinbg this. It's a shame, really.

It could be his goal actually.

I used to think the seb was the greatest knife ever. I still own 2, I love em, but I carry nothing but Spyderco. I prefer that they aren't finished to look like art; I like it simple, purely functional. They have solid construction, perfect edge geometry, various designs, a reputation in the field to boot, and the just are the damn sharpest things I've ever found!

The only thing Benchmade is good at is the Axis lock, otherwise I find the production quality far lower. They're becoming like CRKT, making a knife to suit every single person's taste, a new knife every week, nothing is perfected. Compared to Spyderco design, I feel like Benchmade, and most other production companies don't really design their knives for cutting anymore. They're all focusing on having the best "name brand" materials, some overrated knifemaker's name on the collaborations, newest look, and coolest locking mechanism. Give me a lockback FRN Endura any day!

SPYDERCO4EVER! :p

Sounds like you haven't handled a Benchmade Doug Ritter Grip. :) I agree, most of Benchmade's blades aren't the best designs for slicing, but the Ritter Grip finally fills that void.
