Great definition, Will!! They are truly useful cutting, carving tools!! But they almost seem to have been invented by someone who had never seen a pocket knife before!!!
John Lloyd made this set of them, and did indeed get the proportions right!!
My three favorite traditional handles - Ebony, Stag and "pre-ban"!!!

A Barn find - a box of 1/2 dz. Lockwood Brothers Ettricks, unused, on an old sheep farm in New Zealand!!
They were each wrapped in a "cellophane" that had turned to dust!!
Note the "wraparound" springs!!!

Note the heavier, more robust approach to the pattern!!

Good eye!! You are correct!!! Note how Evan copied the sapwood intrusion (the old Joseph Rodgers above) on the Cocobola handles near the butt!!
