What is the Definition of Ettrick??

Nice work on that, think I need to get another one of these appealing oddities. They feel right in the hand and work well for horticultural purposes, probably skinning too maybe ? Let us know how the whittling goes, I hope the steel is tougher than this one I got..OK for chopping a Pecan or two but when I was scoring Chestnuts for roasting , the tip didn't break off but it bent/curled so they must be running some soft :poop: at times.

Yours also has a neatly cut off spring, many of theirs have very ragged looking springs although a Pruner I got last year in Oak is a really well-finished knife with no drawbacks.

Late on the reply here sorry. I’d started to reply but it got off on a bit of a rant 🤣, so I popped a pin in it for later.
A simpler reply is: thank you, yes they do feel quite special in the hand, I find myself fondling it a lot driving to and from work. Steel seems like it could be a little on the soft side too? Need to whittle more and report back!
Overall fit and finish for an A Wright is decent, but, I expect this as a minimum for an old firm in the heart of the cutlery world 🤷🏻‍♀️
Am I seeing a swedge there on yours??

Nice Ettrick, Thomas!!
Oh thank you Charlie 🫡

What a wonderful thread, loads of information about this cute, elegant pattern.

A few days ago, I received my A.Wright Ettrick. I was quite surprised, after the negative things I heard, poor fit and finish etc.
Mine came with nice fit, great spring, centered blade. Feels wonderful for small cutting chores. BUT.. the edge at nearly 0.27" is more than I would use for a machete!!

But a nice piece of history for sure!

Here's an interesting Ebony Lockwood from the David Hayden-Wright collection. Its not exactly an Ettrick, but I'll call it a first cousin to one!

I've read these were Irish gentleman's knives. If anyone would have info on the pattern it would be greatly appreciated!

WinMag775 WinMag775 It's an unusual pattern to our eye yes, but why Irish gentleman? Probably a selling point whimsy? The very rounded swayback handle speaks Pruner and the long slim straight edge , it has its style in Ettrick but not the execution. However, the photo you post of the display case is a trove of old styles and variations, the Lamb Foot & Ettrick being immediately identifiable and the others are fascinating variations that would be unfamiliar to the more modern eye.

Fantastic knife and proper vintage

So where can someone buy an Ettrick (or a lambsfoot for that matter) in the US? It seems like it requires placing an order someplace in the UK and wait for things to be made. And deal with the changing tariff landscape. These are really neat knives, but it they are not something you can just order at the normal internet knife warehouses.

Thank you Will. "Selling point whimsy" is a great way to put it! I was fortunate enough to pick up 6 from this display. The Ettricks were already spoken for by the time I got to them. Which is unfortunate, because they would have been a marquee in the case.

Not sure if this is appropriate to your thread but the design caught my attention last night and I read through the whole thing. I have been thinking about making a farmers knife for use in the garden but the Ettrick has really caught my fancy. I did some designing today and came up with something, wondering if you all wouldn’t mind giving me some input before I bring it to life.

Well I enjoyed carrying my No-Name Ettrick so much, I asked Rhidian to make me one, with a few subtle adjustments!!
First, pictures of the No-Name, which I passed on to a friend - it's a worthy knife!!
NoName 1.jpgNoName 2.jpgBelow is my new Rhidian Ettrick!! The pattern shape is more hand-filling, wider with a slight swell at the butt end! The blade is more professionally ground, and all fitting is smoother!! I like it immensely!! It was greatly influenced by the old Joseph Rodgers that Duncan gave me!!
