What is the Definition of Ettrick??

Sorry - Charlie, well that would have to be a tiny bit of payback for you suggesting to me to come over to Traditionals some years ago when I was asking about a Maher & Grosh 🤣
You are so welcome - again a small percentage compared to your generosity towards me 😊👍
I believe you sent me that Maher&Grosh also!! ( Didn't I do a thread on it??) Talk about generosity!!!
I owe you a few buddy!! ;)

Charlie, you bought that off me :) - and your offer was again generous.
This is the kind of invisible wrapping that your SFO's come with - a love of Knives and knowledge shared to all of us by having that passion integrated into an actual knife, not only a Knife but a gorgeous Knife! You saw a pattern that grabbed your attention- and now just look at those beauties!

Actually I wonder why you didn't do a Ettrick Line with Bill Charlie?

This Ettrick has a slight curve to the blade; similar to a peach pruner.

I've seen Duncan and pocketknifejimmy's knives with the larger swayback handles called Tackler's knives. Tacklers being workers in the weaving industry. That brings me to this knife advertising buffalo pickers. Pickers were used to weave cloth by moving the shuttle from one side of the loom to the other. Pickers were made from water buffalo hide due to its toughness. Hide pickers were used up to the 1950s when they were replaced with more durable synthetic materials. Charlestown, Todmorden and Eastwood located in Yorkshire just inside the border with Lancashire seemed to be the picker making capital of the UK. I hope this is of interest and not too much of a digression.

Currently sat in an attic in Todmorden........;)

My first Ettrick!! the knife has been on my radar for a year or 2 maybe?
I just liked something about its looks but didn’t see me using one over any of the other knives I have (fuller/bigger blades and straighter handles).
That coupled with my not-so-great feelings towards the A Wright knives of recent years I just hadn’t pulled the trigger yet.

But after finding this thread over the weekend (thank you Charlie 🤘) and getting stuck into the pages now the time felt right.

I reached out to a Famous Sheffield knife Shop 😏 , I wasn’t for playing the Roulette of Will I or Won’t I get something acceptable and fit for purpose or will it be just another rushed object thrown together at hurtling speeds just to fulfill orders! Honestly I could really ruffle some feathers here with some folks but I’ll be quiet..

Needless to say though having a conversation with a real human and stating what I was looking for has turned up trumps. As opposed to clicking through an order over the internet.

He ain’t perfect, again, I’ll be quiet about our good ol’Sheffield cutlers 🙄, but he’s close. And covered in some quite nice Ebony I can forgive a gap or two (or 3)and an off centre blade).

Here’s a few before photos fresh out the packet.
Tomorrow I’ll spend a little time with some sandpaper on him and update with some photos.

All my griping aside I’m a happy chap, and I do appreciate that such cutlers are still around.

Nice Ettrick 👍🤠

Managed some fettling time this morning.

Slimmed out and rounded covers slightly and added matching swedges for a sleek look 👀 also centred the blade and gave it a hot vinegar dip!

Mark side has some nice highlights and is overall a dark brown..

Pile side however is dark, “black as fire back” as we’d say here.

Gentle Swedge..also happy it has the older tang stamp.

Centred up 👌

Absolutely love the little knife, something steeped in history, maybe, sort of 😂.
Hoping to teach myself a little carving skills this summer.

Nice work on that, think I need to get another one of these appealing oddities. They feel right in the hand and work well for horticultural purposes, probably skinning too maybe ? Let us know how the whittling goes, I hope the steel is tougher than this one I got..OK for chopping a Pecan or two but when I was scoring Chestnuts for roasting , the tip didn't break off but it bent/curled so they must be running some soft :poop: at times.

Yours also has a neatly cut off spring, many of theirs have very ragged looking springs although a Pruner I got last year in Oak is a really well-finished knife with no drawbacks.
