What is the dumbest thing you have seen a non-knife person do with a blade?

What's up with that? I think I even read that running a finger along the edge tests the sharpness in a review or somewhere. The only thing I can think of, is it to see how easily it cuts you? Running a finger across the edge shouldn't get you cut if you do it horizontally, as opposed to at an angle, with your thumb or finger, but does that really test the sharpness? Doesn't it only work the "micro teeth"?

Look up Murray Carter on YouTube and watch the video on how he tests sharpness. This will explain how to actually test an edge by running a couple fingers on the edge. I test all my knives like this now.

Just looked that up and tried it. Thank you for the suggestion.

Wow, very interesting.

After last night I'm not sure if I deserve to be called a knife person. I flayed a 3/8" diameter x 1/8" deep hunk off the back of my middle finger, from just above the cuticle to the knuckle, while attempting to disassemble my CRKT swindle. Took me a few seconds to realize exactly what had just happened. Then I saw the section of finger material sitting on the blade. I immediately initiated the process of a DIY graft of said tissue back into place. Now under supervision of a hand specialist.

To be honest, I do the same thing to test the. But ive been sharpening knives for like four years now and ive mastered my own technique of sharpening. I'm fully aware of their cutting power. And yeah, it really only works of you use the a tooth edge, which is what i prefer.

Ouch! How did that happen?

Basically I was concentrating and pulling on the scale and my hand slipped. Subconsciously I thought the edge was facing away from me because the handle is curved in the opposite direction on this knife. It wasn't...and I won't make that mistake again. And I'll be taping over the edge whenever performing service on a knife.

Don't feel too bad. I cut myself pretty stupidly with a BRKT STS-8. I had just purchased it off tge exchange and was attempting to remove some light scratches from the blade with a magic eraser. I was scrubbing the blade and slipped. I froze because I immediately knew I had cut myself, but was afraid to look and see how bad. My right ring finger just felt warm. When I finally opened my eyes and looked down, there was a hunk of my finger laying on the blade from the outside of my ring finger just behind the first knuckle. About the size of a dime and a mm or 2 thick, nice little divot. That was about 2 years ago? It healed over nicely but there was a nice hole there. It's just recently filled in and is flush with the rest of my finger.

A friend of mine used some huge Bowie knife to field dress a deer once. I was offering him my 3" blade, and he wasn't having it.... It did not go well! The gut contents of that deer stunk soooo bad I will never forget it.

Funny thing is - he claims to be a knife guy.... And he actually owns some damn expensive knives. Several nice customs including 2 Shiva Ki spirit blades and a Shiva Ki Merc! Some dudes just have more dollars than "sense"...

A certain family member of mine who has three degrees and two diplomas very stupidly opened up a brand new multitool blade and PUSHED DOWN with his index finger onto the sharp end of the blade to fully open it... You can guess what happened next

Took a good few weeks to heal. It was also a cheap multitool. Had it been one of my hair whittling sharp Opinels, he would've probably split his index finger in two

He's an extremely smart person, and I have enormous respect for him, but he wasn't so smart that day

A (know-it-all) friend wanted to check out my Swisstool Spirit after he saw me use it. He looked at it for a bit, then pulled out the serrated blade. I warned him to be careful as I had sharpened it the previous day. He says, 'That's not sharp.' Then presses his finger onto the serrated edges and pulls his finger down blade.

Blood dripped from his finger liked an opened faucet. After he bandaged it, I just looked at him and said,'Toldja.' Mr know-it-all finally had no words.

I tried to cut a hard oatmeal cookie in half when I was young. It took ages for my finger tip grow back. Does that count?

One of my favorites just happened about three weeks ago. An old friend of mine used a CRKT M16 as a screwdriver because he was too lazy to use the Leatherman Wave that was about three feet away. I just don't get it.

The dumbest thing i've seen.....
I grew up on Butterfly knives and so did my friends. 40 years later we can still flip them w/ ease, I always figured men of my generation just know how to use one. One day when traveling I came across a Butterfly knife, I did a few flips w/ it and then passed to my friend, he's my age (44), he took it w/ out saying a word and did a few awkward flips then handed it back to me w/ a big gash on his palm and said "No idea how to use this thing".

What happened to your friend? I want to read the rest of this story :).

The dumbest thing I saw a non-knife person do is be a non-knife person.
I win, nothing worse.

When non knife people got the power to write the laws that punish/prevent the knife folks from carrying and using their knives.

This happened when I was young and stupid, I just bought a Gerber locking folder and it was very sharp. My freezer needed defrosting so out comes the knife and I start chipping ice and felt a tickle then noticed blood. I had a very clean one inch cut on there side of my thumb, took 4 or 5 stitches and left a nice scar. My also like to use knives for pry bars. After getting really hot she quit I think haven't seen bent tips in along time
