What is the ULTIMATE super steel?

Do you really think it is as simple as that? No consideration for blade thickness/width/length???

A toothpick made of D2 will break a lot sooner than a 1" diameter bar of D2.

Please try to put some intelligence behind your questions.
Just overall, Knifesteelnerds scored D2 with a toughness factor of 3.5/10. Someone on another forum also was kind enough to provide the following, since you seem to want to avoid answering the question (perhaps you knew where I was going with it?)

D2 toughness is 5 ft*lbs, A2 is ~15 ft*lbs, L6 and 52100 - 25 ft*lbs, 5160 - 45 ft*lbs, 8670 - 50 ft*lbs

I'm not really looking for a pocket knife to butter my bagel from the coffee shop on the fly whenever I'm out. I'm sure D2 would be enough to suffice for such a task. If you're happy with it, great. All the power to you. You're probably older than the patent belonging to D2 as well. Doesn't mean I should stick to ancient relics that were the best choice available almost a century ago.

Wot do you mean, "another forum," m8? Bladeforums is king of the forums.

Continue to wallow in your ignorance.

So now we define what makes good steel by some arbitrary "toughness" number???

Foot-pounds is a measure of force, not "toughness" and certainly not breaking strength or tensile strength or sheer strength.

You sure quote a lot of misinformed sources as some sort of validation to the fact you don't like D2. I've wasted enough time with you and this thread.

Wallow on.....

Toughness is overrated in a folding knife IMO. If you’re looking for something to split logs with go with 3V. If you want the ultimate edge retention for cutting cardboard all day, S90V is a good choice. A good mix of both, S35VN. Or D2 if you want to save a few bucks and corrosion resistance isn’t your top priority.

So you admit there's no ultimate super steel and that there will be trade-offs between various steels?
Yes, this thread spans ten pages in length and I've read everything. I feel like my knowledge of the subject matter is much better than it was yesterday (and I STILL hardly know anything 😨) Plenty left to learn still.

I've got a S35VN steel blade coming in the mail sometime this week, I think that should serve as a good starting point for how to appreciate what has been described as a 'premium' steel. Maybe not a 'super' steel, but I think I should be satisfied with the item regardless.

Whatever you say old geezer.

What happened to ignoring me? I'd be honoured to accompany that one fella in that serene ban land of yours.

Please don't forget this person is 100% troll. Besides starting multiple troll threads he's not able to comprehend a century of real world use and instead focuses on one single chart that he doen't even understand.

He's trying to spend Disney bucks at Cesar's Place.

Hi Dinke, let's assume this was true for a moment. Isn't it somewhat contradictory for you to accuse someone of trolling, only to then continue 'feeding' them on not one but two forums?? You've said the exact same thing on two completely unrelated topics on two different forums. If there's anyone who is trolling it is YOU. "Disney bucks at Cesar's palace" has absolutely no place for discussion on a knife forum, I have not commented on any of your threads, but you have commented on every one of mine recently. You're literally targeting and harassing me, and I'm going to ask you to stop. Your behavior is very unwelcome, and borderline creepy.

Thanks - yes you did tell me that before. Will make a note this time so I don’t forget and once this thread has determined the ULTIMATE super steel lol I might try to have something made by them.

Edit - oh - is that what’s now Wilson Combat? Looks like they only make folders now. Probably won’t be taking any custom orders then… :(

The original Wilson Tactical was a side business of Wilson Combat back when all they made were custom 1911's. Wilson Tactical was run by Ryan Wilson (who also made the original knives, all fixed-blades). Later Wilson Tactical expanded into collaborations with other high-end knife makers. The Wilson Combat line of knives is something separate. I think the Wilson Combat knives are outsourced to production knife makers.

On rare occasions some original Wilson Tactical fixed-blades show up on the secondary market (like Arizona Customs). The original knives tend to be pretty heavy-duty, sometimes with integral guards, and typically with micarta handles. They came in two blade finish options- black cerakote, and bead blasted. My model 25 is a little brute of a knife with a 5" long blade and 7/32nds of an inch thick.

Imagine thinking you knew more than Larrin from KnifeSteelNerds. Trolls gonna troll. Naturally you have no research of your own.

Glad you're still reading your other posts even though you went limp there.

Somewhere out in the infinity of space billions of light years away is a meteorite that has just the right metal for making knives. It can be heat treated to harder than diamond yet tougher than a career politicians back side, completely corrosion resistant, doesn’t ever need sharpening, has perfect geometry to cut anything anywhere, light weight and has the appearance of timascus in flame flickering spell binding beauty, uneffected by temperature, pressure or any known thing. Can be easily formed to desired shape, and finished in just minutes looking like a custom that took 100s of hours by the best master cutler. And can be bought for under $50 from your nearest dealer but $50,000,000.00 from a dude in India on the bay.

Not to be to negative here but I don’t think it’ll be found any time soon but anything is possible. 😆 Best chance is on the bay, them guys have stuff you’ve never heard of and super rare. 😂😂😂

Thin knives are easy to sharpen. With replaceable utility blades, you don't have to sharpen often. Some knives need to be tough and don't need to cut well. Don't expect a knife to do too many things well. That's like getting an F-35. You probably wouldn't want to chop and carve with the same tool.

I'm really happy I signed on here... Free lessons on how to be a smartass!

Best knife I owned was "titanium" coated $7 blade that I bought from Ross Dress For Less that was made in china. Could use it as a razor when sharpened, when it lost it's edge, which was probably within a week, it took about two minutes on a two sided stone to get it back, with no special sharpening talent. Wasn't super rust resistant but didn't pit. Obviously non of the super steels, although I own some now and the difficulty to sharpen without some special tool, just makes me want to go stab someone. Your guess is as good as mine. But at the cock knife show all my friends think I'm the coolest now with my new Benchmade m390.

Again, I'm going to politely ask you to stop. You're adding nothing to the discussion and are instead trying to inflame other users.

I'm going to assume you're the new user above, 'Surfinpete,' who just made an account to comment on my post here. You're completely and unequivocally in violation of site rule #3

I'm asking you to stop your behavior, it is very unwelcome.
