My father works at an old quarry and one of their properties has an old black smith shop that hasn't been used in a long time. They are going to either scrap or sell of some of the stuff and he has a chance to buy this. If history repeats itself with his company, it will be very cheap. This is the only picture he took of it when he was there today. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1425675706.010420.jpg

He said they would take an offer on it, what should we offer for it. The foreman said its been there over 60 years, and last time they messed with it. It worked

I posted this over in hammer and tongs but it isn't getting anywhere.

My dad works at a quarry and one of their facilities has an old black smithing shop. We have a chance to offer a bid on this. I would like to know if anyone has any info on a contraption like this, and what it's worth. They said it needs a weld or two done to it but last time they fired it up it worked. Also, a guy there said its over 60 years old.

Looks to me to be some form of power hammer. The hammer being part of the rotating machinery and the anvil is an actual anvil, as pictured. You can also see the treadle wrapping around the bottom of the anvil stand to actuate the hammering.

It definitely looks like a power hammer. Looks like you pump the pedal to work it. It seems to work like an old sewing machine.

Like I mentioned in the other post, it looks like some form of power hammer. I have no idea as to value but if you can, get them to run it for you to verify it works. Anything that works has to be worth more than something that doesn't. Bid accordingly.

The name is right there on the front

"Blacker Hammer"
That will lead you to more info

I'd classify it as a helve type hammer

It 's interesting, but I'd offer just over scrap rate $0.10 per pound
No more than a couple hundred

Keep in mind you have to drag it home.

Hey count, I didn't even see that. Thanks for pointing it out. If we can score it low, transporting it wouldn't be that big of a deal. So hopefully we can. I think that would be cool.

The anvil and solid steel block under it have got to be worth a pretty penny, That looks to be a 500 pounder at least, plus another 500lbs for the steel block underneath

I see 400 pound anvils going for 2 grand + on ebay all the time

after looking around a bit, it looks like that is a 515lb fisher, cast iron, welded steel face, Its hard to see in the picture but in the middle right there should be a stamp of an eagle

So John, what would you recommend we bid on it, if just for the anvil?

I have no idea.... most of the expensive anvils I have seen have the wrought iron base, that anvil is cast, but people seem to love them just the same, also there seems to be a cult like following for the blacker hammers, you would likely get an educated opinion on the price if you asked at http://www.iforgeiron.com/ or http://www.anvilfire.com/

Yes, those Blackers generally came with a 500lb +/- anvil..Bid on it just for the anvil!

I'd guess if you can get it up and running, it could sell for $2k - $4k, maybe more. But you would need to find the buyer. There are those that love this old equipment, simply to show it off at the local fair.

The cheapest that I have seen a power hammer is $800 - $1000 and that would be building myself. A Chinese air hammer is $1k up and you have to supply the compressor.

I would use the absolute hell out of that thing.
