What is with A.G. Russel?

My experience with AG Russell's CS has been terrible.
Their prices are higher than other Internet shops, like One Stop Knife.
Their copy of Pat Crawford's one handed knife was inferior, though he did pay Crawford for the design.
I expect his copy of Chris Reeve's work will also be inferior, the same price as the original, with no payment to CRK for their design.
Other then that, they are probably no worse then.............sorry can't think of a knife company they are equal/superior to. I suppose if your in prison or a mental ward and can't order from anywhere else and can't find a piece of steel to make a shank with, maybe they would be OK to order from. Other then that, I'd pass.:thumbdn:

Some of these statements are so outlandish that they deserve to be given any credence only in the theater of the absurd. You are nothing but an anoynmous troll on the internet insulting a company that has, for the last 4+ decades, carried the name of it's owner on every catalog it prints and on every knife it makes.

Folks, godot related his problems with A.G. Russell's customer service in another thread:
As for AG Russell's CS, I bought one of his one handed knives years ago and it wouldn't take an edge. I used stones-crock sticks Etc, but nothing would get an edge on this piece of crap. I sent it back in to be sharpened and they sharpened it all right. They put it on a bench grinder and ground down part of the thumb stud. That was an expensive knife for me then and I was very disappointed in the service. I'd never buy, nor would I recommend their shop to anyone. :thumbdn:

So, first, he has mistaken one person's error for proof that Russell's customer service is terrible. Second, instead of making use of AGR's great return policy, and thereby getting an actual indication of AGR's customer service, he has instead taken this one incident as apparent proof that AGR is amongst the worst of knife purveyors. I would urge godot to send his knife in, see how CS responds, and report back to us here with his findings.

As for Russell's costs, some of them are indeed higher than elsewhere but, usually, I would gladly pay a little extra to know that I will be happy or that I will be made happy, no questions asked. Not to mention the 12+ catalogs a year, all of which I am sure cost a good bit to print and ship, being well worth the few dollars extra that I might pay.

I guess some people don't care for the catalogs. I read them like they're magazines. :)

don't feed the trolls. it just encourages them. we know who is right...

For once I will take this advice and keep my mouth shut.

No matter where you go, no matter when you go there, there will always be that one poster who does not have enough common sense to realize MOST of us (99.99%) posting in this thread have the utmost respect for A.G. Russell, the man and A.G. Russell the business owner.

Don't like the man then do not do acknowledge his existence.
Don't like his business then take your money elsewhere

In any event just..........................:foot::foot::foot::foot: (I promised myself I would not feed the Trolls in 2010)

The only thing godot's rant proves is that he didn't read this thread, which conclusively demonstrated that the few who denigrate AG's work will always be vastly outnumbered by the many who stand up to celebrate it.

However, this is FEEDBACK, not Whine & Cheese, so we really should keep the vitriol under control.

I have just five words that should settle it..

KNIFE MAKER HALL OF FAME

any questions?? Good class dismissed.

Now that you've brought it up I have a couple of questions

The first is what knife has AG Russell actually made?

The second is what Hall of Fame is he in? A web search shows two and he isn't in either, which given that he doesn't actually make knives should come as no surprise.

Perhaps there is a Knife Sellers Hall of Fame and if so he and Lynn Thompson should each have a place.

I just received my latest order from AG's shop today:

both of these:

two of these in mammoth ivory

and another one of these
RUL-FT04.jpg

The prices were competitive, shipping was prompt, and the items themselves are interesting (if not unique) and very good quality. Shopping at AG's website was made enjoyable by the wonderful photos and descriptions that are insightful and detailed. I've also shopped from his physical store and from printed catalogs, with the same satisfaction every time.

No other knife store, online or off, offers better service than AG Russell. Some are just as good and many more are almost as good, but none are better.

John-I stand corrected, though if AG Russell is listed as a knifemaker, I can't see how they left out Lynn Thompson.
Perhaps this year.

Perhaps there is a Knife Sellers Hall of Fame and if so he and Lynn Thompson should each have a place.

Perhaps you should go and start another Lynn Thompson thread of your own in the W&C forum, please and leave this thread here.

And Lynn Thompson has a place alright but I wouldn't describe it as in any Knife Hall of Fame. :thumbdn:

The first is what knife has AG Russell actually made?

From his website:

"I have been designing knives almost since I could hold a pencil, actually making my first knife at about the age of nine. I made knives for fun until the early 1960s when I started selling them as a business. Having started the oldest mail order knife business (1964), the oldest knife collectors club (1969-1970), and the oldest after-market knife business (1968), I have had a wonderful 40 years in this business."

Well the truth is the very first Cutlery hall of fame was the Knife Digest Cutlery Hall of Fame in April of 74 and I was the first person nominated.

I made knives for years until I met Bob Loveless and Bob Dozier and learned that they could not only do better work but could do it in half or less the time. Thereafter I pretty much kept to designing.

I regret your ill-will, not for me, because it works to my advantage, but for you, because it poisons your system and results in people looking down on you. How can I help you get past your bad experience?

Hmmmm....... I never got mine. I had forgot all about it. When did you get yours?
Maybe mine got lost in the mail or something????
Oh well, I have no idea..... :)
It does look like a handy little gadget though.

Teacher,

Did you send me your real name, address, and the post number on the thread?
It did not matter if the post was positive or not only that it was there.

Yeah, I did send it AG... no problem though.... it could very easily have been overlooked, I know you have a bunch going on. :)

I'll send it again though....... and it was positive all the way. :D

I think I have at least one of every Deer Hunter you have produced. To me they are just a fine hunting knife.
