What is your dream forging press?

It should have a locking system so the dies dont move yet easy to remove and replace dies with forging gloves on

It should have an adjustable pressure relief valve so even a 35 ton press will pop off at low pressure for fine forging of tips and tangs. This valve should be easily adustable with a knob instead of an allen wrench.

The hydraulic oil tank could be part of the square tubing or an enclosed side of the I beam.

All hoses need to be shielded to keep hot billets from burning holes in them and allowing 2500 psi of oil to spew out. I wonder if it would be flaming oil?

The ram needs to be long enough to allow the billet to be squished from end to end.

It needs a two stage pump that will deliver at 11-13 gpm and an 1800 rpm motor. (my motor is a 3 hp and spins at 3600 rpm and is loud)

A foot control would be nice so both hands could be used to hold those heavy billets.

The height should be high enough to see with bifocal glasses (for us old farts)

A huge selection of dies sets on a tree that rotates for easy pickins.

Ah, now I understand! There's a lot of nut there to squish. Or is that nutbag?? :D

I'll get that S30V chopped off the bar today. Been stuck inside cuz of the ozone for three days......
measure of PSI

no nuts in that old bag :footinmou :D Tx Ray

good info here.

does anyone have
max specks
HP
RPM's
GPM
piston size.
and Hyd motor sizes for said uses.
I know you'll have a % loss from engine to Hyd motor..
known facts
I have a 8HP gas engine may modify to 10HP
I have a 5" piston
maybe a 7" thanks Ray I'll sure think on that.

like Ron said 1/4" or so.. I want power and just reasonable speed.
Bruce
I like the Idea of an adjustable relief valve to back down the pressure..
I'm thinking a hand control or an ele remote
The hydraulic oil tank could be part of the square tubing that a yes
but has to be very good welding..

Is a 1725 rpm better than a 3450 rpm for the motor? Also, what is the advantage of a horizontal press as opposed to a vertical press?

I will compile a list of all the suggestions as soon as I can and post them here .

Thanks everyone, lets keep the ideas coming.

My design incorporates die storage into the H frame. Pics to follow shortly.

Wow! Whenever I think I might be going over the top with my tools, I'll just refer back to this thread for reference purposes about how nuts things can get. A home built 100 ton press sounds like it has plenty of potential for life ending catastrophes.

You guys are amazing.

I'm sticking with stock removal for now, but some day might go as far as banging on my puny 100lb anvil some day.

Dream press
That’s a tuff one .
One that mash out 1000 dollar bills oops 5lbs steel in the minds of great masters mashers can produce that .
One that makes every thing perfect and fast hummmm that would be boring ,
One that has great control so that I can determine its effects on the steel .yes

One that I can gang mash Buicks together hence car crushers 100 tons and up
one that fits my shop and needs ---- am I mashing Buicks for projectile in the desert or building a billet for a one of a kind folder .
One that has ram speed that I if I blink I can see the $1000.00 billet change into 20 dollor disk that looks like road kill
one that when I start it I can lock it in and go grind a few blade or call Kelly for more steel
do so wire inlay start a new press with a bit faster ram speed ( O ) that’s what we are talking about .
I do know that its hard to time a speed when you are only a 1/4 ‘ from your work each time unless you have a controller that will lift the ram all the way back up —but surly in this day and time one would know not to use that for sure.
One that is at a good viewing hight so that it can be watched, a little over 40" high .
Hand or foot controls I like hand controls I have more control in my hands than my feet and I don’t like doing a balancing act while mashing steel
One that is quite so the people down the street want call the swat team in because they think im killing people during the night .
One that I can convince my wife that it’s the best can crusher money can get –honey you can stack a cas of cans 2" tall just think of the room your saving at the recycling place
Easy changing dies again speed is not the biggin here they slid they fit they hold heat
Dies heavy for holding heat and strong .

One that changes as do my needs ----- if I could know what that might be, that would be great
Free
While im dreaming can I get it in red

Hey Ron....you told me my press would do all this when I bought it!

Dream forging press:

Whatever one can be done next week :) (I was gonna say whatever one could be done for free, but that qualifier on the price kinda killed that)

Seriously, I've seen some pretty neat presses, one of the local guys uses a press that's horizontal, he's got dies set up so that he even uses the thing to put the bevels on the blades as he forges them out!

Tony
I have a die designed to do the bevels. Pics will come tomorrow. Im sure everyone will tell me if i am full of crap or not. Im looking forward to the feedback.

I like a few thing different than most my personal press is only 16tons it will do anything I want from one lb to 25 lbs billets its has a deliberate force to keep control JIMMY HYDE and i worked on it i told Jimmy what we needed we made for total control .
Jimmy built the first gave it to me as a gift it is my dream press i will forever think its the best and pricless.
when using a press it has the ability to get to 16 tons or 25 tones or more depending on its setting get to full pressure is what it can do but it can also hold a one lb psi as well, it not at full pressure at all times it will develop more the more you pull the controller or leaver its not a all or none so to have a controller to drop out at low psi is mut to me you already have that built in the system control is holding an egg in place with out cracking it
I also like the rapped hoses but again they are already have three stans of reinforced mesh inside the hoses most hoses give out at fittings where they are movement at full pressure and they move when loaded make sure they move very little .

In a perfect world the unit that run –motor pump and tank are outside the shop some what like air tanks outside
No sound in the shop at all one might have to have a run light so you would know its on ,

I do know it will keep coffee hot

now if I can make it dispense a glass of water or my favorite drink in the summer that also would be nice

I like this thread
What about safely running a dream press

ps -- i can send egg to prove this you will see no cracks in egg  s

got a can of taters and side of country ham you could send up here with them eggs? ;)

Good luck i cant sleep but im headed out to dream of dies that i might want with my dream press have a good one

Hey, Bowie! Yeah, tried laying down and it's not time yet. Mr. Back wasn't ready yet. Our conversation tonight got me to thinking of steel, and grain, and thermal cycles and stuff. Thanks for the fotos. Hope ya have some good dreams when you get to 'em!

Problem is, you mentioned eggs, and then I'm thinking about ham, and the next thing I'm wondering if Cracker Barrel is still open! LOL Grab Phyllis, c'mon up, and we'll go for an early breakfast! I'm buying....

hey Ron......we were just thru Knoxville last week for a few days up in the Smokies. Was gonna give you a call but the little one was cranky and out of sorts....so we decided to head home....I wanted to see if my Guinness was still in your fridge.

I plan on showing off my press to anyone who wants to see it at this Mid America Bladesmithing Expo next month here in Troy. It still looks pretty in the Smurf Blue color.

My dream press should be able to part someone's hair....like we did with Larry Kemp's $3000...errr...uhhh...I mean $3 canister last July

You ought to try and make it for this expo!

Here is the modified H-frame with die storage and the bevel dies.
The tube frame is 6" x 4" x 3/8" wall (because i can get tons of drop off for free)

Nice looking drawing.

Assuming you are going to use the side rails as the die guides, I would make the distance between the upright rails much smaller for less lateral play.
