What is your favorite country that you have no affilation with?

The grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence, where I live Botswana is mostly semi-desert and where it is greener it is full of crocodiles. (Allegorical of Africa).

Life is very interesting here and full of surprises. Goats trotting through suburbia showing more road sense than most humans do. Cats who spend too much time hunting birdies end up as eagle poo. Baboons in the office car park rummaging through the skip. Americans get crop circles, we get cow circles. Cow circles are created by the local herd that were grazing on a traffic circle being distracted by cars going round at rush hour. It is a great place.

Try Burundi, natural beauty, lovely climate, sunsets over Lake Tanganyika and the exquisite food. They live life to it’s fullest because it is usually brutal and short.

Just got back from a few weeks on the Spanish Medeterainian and right now would have to pick that and maybe Northwestern Canada. Spain for the food, sun, wine and women, and Canada for the climate trees other natural beauty.

The Netherlands. Food, people, "cultural institutions" of all flavors.

:D

Great country, plus they have one of my favorite cities. Amsterdam.

Also love Israel and England. Great people and historical places to visit.

South Africa, or at least Cape Town. Spent 3 months there in 1998.

Some of the people are nasty, some are crazy. The rest are a lot of fun. The women are hot, a lot of people (from all different groups) like to talk to foreigners, the climate is great, there's wonderful jazz, and Xhosa people will sing on trains.

Don't forget the Taxi's that stop where, when and how they want :D

My favourite place is Israel because that's where I met my wife :)

Scottland. I would love to see the highlands, and spend a few months there. Maybe someday.

So don't pick a country that is your nationality (if you are American, don't pick US) and don't pick a country of your ethical origin (if you are Irish American, don't pick Ireland). Please don't turn this into a "my least favorite country in the world topic" by posting your most hated country. Also, lets put the past behind us and focus on the present. So don't vote for Egypt because you like the pyramids, because ancient Egypt is long gone. Post reasons why you like the country (culture, politics, people, etc).

I pick Japan even though I have never been there because
*sushi: yum yum
*Nintendo: my favorite gaming company
*bowing: both cute and respectful IMO
*Godzilla: Raaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwww!!!!!!
*Animators: they animated my favorite cartoon, Batman The Animated Series
*Language: sounds so happy and childlike (no offense)
*Pen and mechinical pencils: I would like them better if I don't lose them so often

I would like to visit Australia. Rural living there reminds me of the Old South. This is based on books & chats on this forum. Some WWII friends tell about warm hospitality there.

Only alien places I've been are Japan,Korea & oh,yeah, New Jersey.

Uncle Alan :D :) ;)

I used to thrive on roughing it & this looks great to me. The kids said to spend their inheritance on myself & it looks tempting. Can an old smoker cope on your airlines if I could get 'em on our West coast? Know I can smoke shipboard but crossing the Pacific wasn't too unplesant but you are further than Japan ,I believe. Would be a long trip but with better accomidations than my troopship. ;) .

Something to chew on. Wife likes the idea.

Thanks Gaz

Well Al, you can't smoke on our planes but it's only 14 hours from LA to Sydney. It would only be a few more from there to any of the big stations although you wouldn't need to go that far out to see working stations if you didn't want to. If you wanted to see a bit of the country without too much rough stuff you could take the train, the 'Indian Pacific' from Sydney to Perth, or the 'Ghan' from Adelaide to Darwin, one of the world's great train journeys.

Let me know if you do decide to come over this way, I'll help where I can.

If you like war memorials visit Canberra, one of the really great ones, you could spend a couple of days in there. I'm not too far from there, I'll buy you a beer. :)

New Mexico is the 48th state, not a country.

Sweden. I've never been there, no relatives there, etc.

The women look pretty hot, from the photos I've seen :) , and from what I can tell, the country, and its people are pretty civilized.

Tch! There is always some pedantic bugger around to spoil the story .... ;) :)

If you read the following posts, I am not the only pedantic one, in fact they caught me, 47th it was.

Well, I love visiting Britain, which I do about once every 18 months. Every time I am there I am amazed at how much I like it. Most of the time it's been England, but I loved Scotland too and need to spend more time there. they have very interesting things to drink there.

I would love to visit Japan and New Zealand.

For all those who said Israel, well come on over. For those of you who are religious, (or not!) come see all the sights. Bring your Bibles. Whether or not you believe the events occurred, the places still exist, and are fascinating to see. Whether is is the Elah valley (David vs. Goliath), Jericho, The Horns of Hittin, Meggido (Armageddon), the site of the Loaves & Fishes story, the Valley of Ayalon (sun stood still)........And of course Jerusalem.....
...and great pubs in Tel Aviv.

don't mind the commercial--I am just homesick.

Hi All-

My heritage is a combination of Scandinavian and Mediterranean ancestry. My vote therefore goes to THAILAND for purposes of this poll.
  • They enjoy American visitors and regard us as strong allies
  • They have little tolerance for minority Islamic kooks in southern Thailand
  • The spicy food is fantastic and affordable
  • Beautiful beaches on the Andaman Sea in absence of tsunami waves
  • Lush green mountains in the northern Chiang-Rai region
  • The charming and graceful Wai given and received in public

I'm an Aussie of Celtic descent (like most of us) so my natural affinity with 'the old dart', Scotland and Ireland is predictable.

I've rarely met a Kiwi I didn't like. Cool, amiable, capable, creative bunch of people.

South East Asia in general but probably Indonesia because it's closest. Something keeps herding me back there time after time.

WAAAAY too hot and humid for me over there. Being a Celt also, (on both sides of the family), I seem to be programmed for colder climates. West coast of Ireland is my type of place.
