If you had $200(give or take ten bucks) to buy one Spyderco or Benchmade pocket knife to use for the rest of your life, which would you buy and why?

This new Benchmade 535 Bugout. Not even kidding.

Deep carry package weighing in at under 2 ounces, S30V steel with a great blade size and shape, axis lock....

I am sincerely shocked at how much I am enjoying this piece.

You should change your thread title to clarify that this thread is for only Spyderco or Benchmade, Because I was about to post what one of my favorite knives is which is not a folder nor a Spyderco or Benchmade and was not even close to 200$ ( probably $1.50 new in the 50's, and only costed me only $18 last year )

Between Benchmade and Spyderco it would be M390 Contego. Carried mine all the time..... until I bought my ZT 0562CF. Contego just fits my large hands, love the blade shape. Just a great knife if you like large knives.

Spyderco Gayle Bradley 2. Super tough, well made, classic Taichung fit and finish, almost as smooth as my Slysz Bowie, it's CPM-M4, 3.6" which is my sweet spot, also looks gentlemanly, can be had for right under $150. It's a hell of a bargain for what you get in materials and fit and finish.

I'd buy a P'kal if I could only have one Spydie. Pikal is not great for EDC tasks though. Thus if I could only have one I would be very happy with a waved endura.

KW exclusive Spyderco Military cts-204p green g10 or KW exclusive Benchmade 710-1401

If I really had to choose one of these brands then I'd choose a plain edge orange Spyderco ladybug.
Knowing what I need in a knife ( I have no problem carrying just a peanut )this could easily be an only modern folder for me.
You didn't actually say this, but if it has to be an only EDC knife for the rest of my life ( this is not the traditional section ,so that means I still get a traditional knife )
They look to me to be the peanut of modern folders, meaning they don't realize they're small and cut way above their size.
Plus I've wanted one for a long time but just don't order knives online and don't have a knife store to get one from.

Btw it's well under 200$ ( I believe less than 50$ ) so I can put the rest towards other Hobby's Because you didn't say the knife had to cost the whole 200$.

Benchmade 940. Either the standard, or G-10 variant. I don't often carry it, but when I do I remember why it's often considered one of the best executed and designed knives in existence. The day Benchmade takes it out of the lineup will be very sad indeed. (I was already sad enough to lose the 710, which would be my second choice BM.)

I don't believe any knife will last me the rest of my life.
Through one issue or another, I have lost any and all taste for Benchmade. It seems to me that their only concern is making nice -looking- knives. Their design, function, build quality & fit and finish is not on par with Spyderco.
The $200 mark is a strange place in the knife world. Knives in this realm are not quite fancy and not quite a true-blue nitty gritty user.
Shooting for as close to $200 as I can, I would choose the KW exclusive CTS-204P Military or the new S90V Fluted CF Native 5.
My personal favorite "EDC" from Spyderco is Native 5 Lightweight followed by Paramilitary 2.

Hands down the KW 204p Millie. No Benchmade would make the cut but maybe that exclusive Grip at DLT, but not being able to see it in person first, won't happen.

I would safe up some more until I had enough for a BM 940-1.

Spyderco doesn't do much for me personally. I've owned a few and they make good knives but I got tired of looking at the stupid hole in the blade. ZT on the other hand....

Spyderco PM2. How dare you put BM alongside Spyderco as if they were equal offerings. :D

Haha, not really, not trying to start a flame war. I like BM too and still own one.

ETA: I do agree with the poster who said OP should update thread title to say it's about BM and Spyderco. It's mildly false advertising.

Ritter Grip. Then save up and get custom scales of your choice.

The blade shape, M390, and Axis lock are compelling. If you can't (or won't) do custom scales then a Native 5 in G10 or CF would be my next suggestion.
