In the mood to buy a new SAK. The only ones I have are an older Champion and a few small Classics that are usually given away to people. I've been looking at the compact pretty hard for the plastic scales and the farmer or pioneer for the alox. In all honesty, a bantam would do the trick, but the compact hasso much more with not alot more width. Alox looks sweet too though. Decisions!!! Feel free to post pics of your favorite and why.

wenger SI!!!
failing that, the victorinox pioneer or farmer
spiffy color if you can find one!

Climber for cellidor, Pioneer for alox. For me, these knives strike the best balance of size to amount of useful tools.

I have also become very attached to the blade-only Vics, like the Solo (both 93mm alox and and 108mm nylon version), Settler, and the smaller Secretary/Pocket Pal/Excelsior/Popular knives.

Alox Cadet. I haven't taken any pics of it. The "why" is because it is flat, light, and does what I need if to do. My second favorite is the Electrician. I use it when the slightly larger size and different mix of tools and blades is more appropriate to my needs that day.

I do have pics of the Electrician. Here's one:

Pioneer. You'll use the awl more than you'll use the file on the Cadet. No saw to give you the bulk of the Farmer. Everything I need and nothing I don't, in a SAK.

Varies by individual. I use the nail file tool on the Cadet all the time. What I don't use is the can opener. I've needed the awl on the Electrician once.

I am the exact opposite of jc57, I like my Electrician better than the Cadet, I really like the secondary blade and the awl. I don't think you can go wrong with any SAK. I have no need for a saw so that leaves the Pioneer out.

True, that. You might get as many answers as there are SAKs. You have to use a few different flavors, for a while each, to find what works for your usual tasks. Pioneer works for me.

OP mentioned my two favs: the Bantam (Alox and cellidor) and the Compact. That and the GAK: the efficiency and utility of the combo tool really do the trick for me.

I just ordered my first, an Electrician in alox. The secondary straight edge blade sold me on it (I'm a stockman guy).
It should be arriving in a day or two.

I like the regular Bantam. The cellidor handles have enough meat for a comfy grip and the single layer keeps things still thin. It is indeed a great size for the pocket, yet large enough to be useful.

If I could take the Cadet, remove the can opener, replace it with a sheepsfoot blade like in the Electrician, but without the rounded cutout wire stripper part, that would be my ideal SAK.

Alox soldier first and then the Alox cadet. I do use the cadet more in the office during the week but the soldier is great for work around the house.

Definitely the Cadet. Drop it into my pocket and forget about it until I need it. And I use the file quite frequently. I really like the tool selection of the MiniChamp, but I don't like using the 58mm SAK's.

if they replaced the file for a 2nd small blade (think the cadet 2 had this) i would be all over it...but i just dont need a nail file that much...certainly not enough to give up my awl for it :d

I love the bantam. It fits in with my mania for maximum utility for minimum bulk and weight. cutting blade? Check. Screws both flat and phillips? Check. Open bottles and cans? Check. A little light prying for when the thumbnail isn't enough? Check. Little tweezers to pull a thorn out of a corgi paw? Check. So light you can drop it in a shirt pocket? Check.

There's something nice about a single back spring knife.

I only own a couple.....The silver one at bottom is my favourite (not sure what model it is?)...The fact it has a very efficent saw is what i like...Very good for cutting antlers in velvet off.....Good tools nonetheless.............FES
