What is your favorite slab for a barlow?

I grew up loving bone covers (still love em) but within the last few years it's EBONY:thumbup::cool:

To me it seems saw cut bone was made for barlows.
Isn't it true that the first time you saw saw cut bone was on a barlow?

Oh that's a tough choice. I really like my 77 pioneer bone. I think I would say the top choice would be, a balanced stag. However, I would buy a saw cut bone in a heart beat.

I know you said one, but, that is often a very tough question. You could not go wrong with either of these choices, in my opinion:

Sawcut Bone followed by smooth bone; They just look right on a Barlow. Third choice would be jigged bone.

Primble's diamond edge is what I was thinking. I knew I saw that type of jigging on a barlow before. (Refering to my earlier post)

Sawcut bone, then smooth bone, then wood. Jigged bone, not so much.

Forget what I said earlier. Primble's saw cut bone (brown) then stag. No one better post a good looking stag or I'll have to change my mind. It's like saying which do you like better pizza or fajitas.

In all seriousness thank you for asking for our opinions.

Only Barlows I own are Case brand, in some variety of jigged bone. I do think that a nice flat-sided sawcut bone is what my mental picture of a Barlow knife is, if only because that's what the first one I ever saw had on it as a kid (could have been plastic for all I know, but it had that sawcut look).

"Favorite" is a tough concept for me. I like different things different days, and when purchasing knives, if I already have enough of one type of thing, even though it may be a "favorite", I may not want the next one to be just like it.

But since I gotta pick just one, sawcut bone it is.

Saw-cut bone in the shade of the one Primble has posted above.

After that, ebony would be nice.

Primble nailed it for me on that TC. That is the perfect choice for covers on a Barlow. Blackwood and good ebony tie for second best cover choice.

For me there's no comparing ebony and African Blackwood, the Blackwood grain uniformly seems tighter and finishes better...African Blackwood for me!

That's a tough one. Its between either smooth yellow, soup bone or sawcut.

If I had to choose I would say a chestnut or similar sawcut bone. Something about a barlow and sawcut bone just screams perfect to me.

I have an old Queen barlow with smooth cherry wood slabs... that's my favorite handle material.
