What is your favorite slab for a barlow?

I do also like that antique amber sawcut bone. And in 2-blade a pen-behind would be fantastic!

IMHO, you've got it exactly right, AZ!

Delrin or plastic. Seriously. I'm truly of the belief a Barlow should be an inexpensive everyman's knife of good steel and little fanfare.

That's an interesting point, leghog; I see where you're coming from.

Maybe someone else could come in with a picture of it, but the best looking to me was the antique amber sawcut bone on the early Charlow that looked sort of greenish.

After experimenting with a lighter tan, and not happy with the results, we came up with an old school color for the 4th handle material. This is done with potassium permanganate, an ancient method of dying bone. You collectors of older knives from long closed cutleries, and also you who have certain examples of Rogers Bone might recognize it. In certain light it has a greenish undertone, and it pocket-ages very nicely.
We're keeping the name Antique Amber just to avoid labelling confusion.
I like the color, and the fact that it goes back in time. I hope I like it as much in person!?!

The finished product had/has more brown, far less green than evident in the above image (a tint discrepancy with the photograph itself, I'd venture), but the above certainly is compelling!

Sawcut bone first in my opinion. Second would be a wood, doesn't matter much which one to me.

I'm hoping this thread is research for an upcoming single blade #77 Barlow.... I'd love to see some red linen micarta, but I'd be just as happy with sawcut bone, preferably the red variety. I like bright colored handles so I don't have to search around for the knife if I set it down.

We all have our favorite colors/shades and my most favorite examples of the antique amber bone are owned by Pertinux and Pistonsandgears. I like mine a lot, but, their examples are super stunning.

Sarah - It sure would be nice to see the on the rocks picture of the knife you posted in my GAW. That might decide it. ;):D

Rams Horn would be interesting... But I would really like to see peachseed jigged bone with the same coloration as Case XX era greenbone. Now that would be a handsome barlow!!!

Wow, so many great suggestions! Reminds me of our house when someone asks, what do you want for dinner. There are 6 different answers. :D Ultimately it is decided by the best cook ever, my wife. I guess what I am saying is it's great to have the opportunity to suggest items for the menu. The pros will make some good decisions based on years of experience. :) But I think we can all agree...hurry up we are hungry!:D

Have a great weekend.

Add me to the sawcut bone camp. Mike, you better place a large order if you make an SFO with sawcut! :p

Either of these please me a lot. But when you think about it, sawn anything - bone, delrin, wood belongs on the Barlow like Horseradish on beef... :D

I really like Stag , but it has been hard for me to lay hands on some. My Eye Witness with Ox Horn is very nice also.

I would like to see some form of soup bone in a more earthy or lighter green color.

I don't have a favorite. I love 'em all!

But as for what I would like to see, what I want to buy...

I would love to see some nontraditional handle covers. I ordered a couple of the stag Barlows coming out next year. But I would really go for Sunbrite acrylic, blue denim Micarta, blue bone, unusual jigged bone (I think GEC had one called Alligator jigging.), and sandblasted bog oak!
