What is your price limit for an EDC?

What is the most you will spend for a knife that you are actually going to use everyday?

About $165 for me, on a recently purchased Alias II. Until then, I had a gifted 1st gen Delica (thanks babe!) that I EDC'd for nearly a decade.

I'm about 70/30%, office/field, and would not likely lose my knife so wouldn't limit my price based on fear of that. The Alias is all I currently need, though I sometimes have a SOG Twitch or a Chive in another pocket or briefcase, as a loaner, or for finer work (sliver in hand, etc...).

kgriggs8... great thread question.

The max I have spent for a user is $146. But the most I will spend is about $150, for a user.

My EDC is a whittler in my left pocket and a stockman in the right. This has
been my edc for 40+ years. yes same knives. The whittler is a Kaiser made in
Germany with pearl scales. The stockman is a Eye brand with stag scales.
I have had them to long to remember what I payed. But if I lost one of
them I guess around 100.00 would replace ether of them. I have also wore the same watch since 1966 a Rolex submariner. So you could say that I am a person of habit.
Now fixed blades are another story. I collect Randall knives and have
spent more than I care to say on them.

Around $100 for me, as that's about as much as I can stand to lose. I've lost two Kershaws this past year, one was an out of production Random Task; man I miss that knife.

Great forums by the way!

If I can afford to buy it, I will carry it. I bought a Sebenza with no intent to let it sit in a drawer, and I have been carrying it for the past few days. I am not sure I see myself carrying anything over $400 but a few years ago I couldn't see myself carrying anything over $100. I will not use my Sebenza for dirty jobs like construction, but then again I'm not in that business, nor do I hold a job that requires the use of a knife, but I generally use one daily.

The price limit is my personal economy. I have no problem carrying and using a 60 € Ka-Bar TDI, or a 300 € hand-made custom puukko. In practical reality, most often I seem to be carrying something between 50 to 200 € in price.

So far my most expensive EDC is my Mini Cyclone TiZDP, at $150.00. Which because of the price I've never taken to work. I mainly just carry it around the house. It hasn't cut anything other than an envelope or two, and some packaging tape. I just don't want to mar the black blade or scratch the Ti scales. I'm in contruction so my knives will see medium to heavy use. I did just buy an Emerson CQC14 for a heavy use work knife, in the $150.00 range and it will not be babied like the Cyclone. I also carry a $50.00 Spyderco Native, which is my work "beater", it's the one I carry when the conditions are muddy, wet, or when there is a chance the knife could be dropped and lost. So far my knives average in the $100.00 range, and I consider all users...except the Cyclone. I may have a deal in the works for a small Sebenza but after reading this thread I am reconsidering. I've never lost a knife, but that makes my odds a little higher, doesn't it?? I don't know what I'd do if I lost a 400.00 knife!

I mostly carry SAK's all well under 60$.
My edc is usually A Vic Compact and/or a Vic OH Trekker (20-40 bucks each).
There is also a Vic Swisschamp that i sometimes use that is in the 40-60$ range.
The only above 60$+ knives i've edc'ed are My (old) Leatherman Wave and two SOG's a Paratool and a First Gen Tomcat.
I have a nice Laguiole bone handled folder that i briefly edc'ed. That was also above 60$ but i got it for a fairly cheap price on ebay.
I could be perfectly happy just carrying a Vic Huntsman (20-40$) for edc.
This is a long winded answer i know, lol.
Honestly i don't think i'd ever go above 100$ for an edc, except maybe for a Buck Custom 110.

$150, though $20 will get it done. I get the best I can afford. Thing is, the best for the job ain't custom or embellished.

There's a funny anecdote about a guy who buys a fancy sportscar. When the salesman gives him the keys, he immediately takes the keys and deliberately scratches the door. "There," he says to the salesman, "now I can enjoy it."

I guess I'm like that with knives. Although I don't deliberately mar them, I try not to be concerned about keeping them pristine; that way I'm not afraid to use them.

To respond more directly to the original post than I did earlier, my edc knives are a couple of SAKs, a Spirit multiool, and a Case peanut. None of these were more than $60 bucks, and all of them show scratches and wear. It's not that I would refuse to spend more on an edc, it's that I'm just lucky that my preferences are relatively inexpensive (although non-knife people would consider $60 a lot of money).

i agree with jacknife and bdws1975. kgriggs8 seems to have a problem throughout the forums with being polite.

'it's the one I carry when the conditions are muddy, wet, or when there is a chance the knife could be dropped and lost."

Yeah, but Dave, that's my definition of an EDC. EVERY day carry under all conditions. My EDC knives generally run less than $50. So what you carry under my definition of EDC is about the same as what I carry. I don't abuse an EDC, but I don't want to be afraid to use it or to lose it.

i just paid 375 for a large sebenza micarta inlay. I use it everyday. But thats probably the most i would spend on a user.

$400 for me. I cant think of a more important tool that I use most frequently. I want the best. Whether custom or production, If you spend more, thats cool...but now you are just getting fancy or into the collectables. Not my bag, but I can understand why ppl do collect. I just dont make enough money to collect knives. I am a user.

I have about $300 into the knife and another $65 in the sheath. Can anybody guess what brand it is? So my highest priced edc is under four bills.

I also enjoy "slumming it" with my $100-200 knives so I don't think that the price is that relevant, it's a matter of buying the knife that I want, when funds are available.

I have to agree with the devil on this one, only I want to put a spin on it.

I say "buy the cheapest knife that you can afford to carry"

I know that I can't afford to have a knife fail on me, can you?

I am now a happily UNmarried knifenut that makes a fair salary with nothing but normal bills to pay each month. I have found that I can buy and enjoy inexpensive knives and I've also found I can buy and enjoy expensive knives (read custom). So what do I spend for an edc? I basically spend the most I can afford at the given time.:D:thumbup:
This might be $100 or it might be $800.

How much is in my pocket when O.C.D. hits. I once went to the big city to buy new winter clothes. I took $350. with me, but made the mistake of going into the knife store at the mall first. Spent three hundred on a knife, bought lunch, put gas in the truck, and came home. So what. I was not the best dressed that winter, But I sure enjoy that knife.
