What is your price limit for an EDC?

I would have no problem spending $200 or more on an EDC knife. Hell I carry a $2500 pistol every day so why not. That being said I have carried a $70 Spyderco Endura II for almost a decade now and I'm only 27. It does everything I ask of it and see no point in replacing it. I lost one a few years ago and I replaced it with another. I guess I don't punish my blades enough to justify more money than that on a pocket knife. Anything that boarders on abuse and I reach for an inexpensive (Cold Steel or the like) fixed blade.

How much is in my pocket when O.C.D. hits. I once went to the big city to buy new winter clothes. I took $350. with me, but made the mistake of going into the knife store at the mall first. Spent three hundred on a knife, bought lunch, put gas in the truck, and came home. So what. I was not the best dressed that winter, But I sure enjoy that knife.

Oh Yeah? Wha'd ya get? :)

For a edc knife I would stay away from knives with a mirror finish and or polished edges.I think they are more for collectors, unless you can afford to buy a replacement.Anyways I would just look at a low maintanace blade around 100-200 bucks with a good blade steel for example kershaw lahar or spyderco endura:thumbup::thumbup::cool::D:);) or manix ect.

about 150 would be my limit. My current highest priced user is about 120 (mini skirmish). I really like the more pricey knives such as the xm18 but i dont hink i could actually use it.

I have collected other stuff but I always find my favorite is the stuff I use. They are the items with personality and actually help you out. I love my knives but they are just tools and should be used as such. I really try to keep my buying to a minimum and rather than acquiring new knives I just admire them from a distance (ie this forum).

Although i dream of having a sweet edc such as a custom or high end production in my pocket I think the money is better spent on others around me such as friends and family.

$50.00 - $100.00 for my EDC. I pack 2 knives & sometimes a Multi-tool (Gerber) . My SAK Soldier never leaves my side :D & around work I pack a waved Spyderco Endura & everywhere else it's a Buck/Stryder 889;)

edited it but I meant that 100.00 will buy you a very good depndable knife that will handle most knife needs. I must have been asleep.:D:D

Surely the answer depends on what Every Day Use actually is.
I work in an office, as a psychotherapist, and I have staff to open packages and mail. The most use my EDC's get is manicures, wayward threads on shirts, etc.
Consequently I can carry my 'art knives' and not ruin the fine finish. My three most common EDC's are $1100, $850, and $400.
Only the $850 is irreplacable, and it is my favourite and most carried. I bought it because I wanted to have it, and carry it. Some people wear expensive jewellery or drive expensive cars, me--I carry beautiful art in my pocket where I can look at it, and use it, anytime I want.

Currently my most expensive is my $65 Leatherman. That's primarily weekend carry though. During the week, I typically carry a Vic Tinker or Case med Stockman. So I guess for me it's currently in the $45 range.

'it's the one I carry when the conditions are muddy, wet, or when there is a chance the knife could be dropped and lost."

Yeah, but Dave, that's my definition of an EDC. EVERY day carry under all conditions. My EDC knives generally run less than $50. So what you carry under my definition of EDC is about the same as what I carry. I don't abuse an EDC, but I don't want to be afraid to use it or to lose it.

I do rotate what I carry depending on what job I'm on. Many times I'm working indoors on an office remodel, or other commercial environment, and I'll rotate thru my HK14210, Para-Military or Caly3, all of which are in the$100.00 range. I have recently stepped up and got an Emerson Snubby for hard use and will be my work EDC 99% of the time. Again job specific, crappy dirty conditions, and my Native will be on duty. I don't abuse any of my knives.

Now at home, my EDC will now be a $400, small Sebenza, I just finalized a trade yesterday. It will be my light duty carry around the house, until I get up the nerve to carry it at work. I went through with the trade having every intention of using this knife for light/moderate use at work and home. So now I guess I just raised the bar on the price of my EDC's from $150 to $400:eek:

I agree with LaBella, he is pretty smart about a lot of things ;)

:D Thanks to those with at least 1/2 a brain

Comparing knives to watches.
It is a well-known fact among watch afficionados that from the standpoint of modern technology the most a watch can cost is $200. That would mean the most accurate and reliable movement, the strongest and completely waterresistant case and scratchproof sapphire crystal. Anything over that, and you are paying for prestige, not for quality.
Of course they pay more for their timepieces, but that's what fun is about.
I should think there is a similar point of balance for knives.
When I was younger, I had payed thru my nose for prestige many times:D
Nowadays when prestige and glamour do not mean that much to me anymore (I hope), an $100 covers my demands for an EDC knife.

buy the best you can afford, there is NO other answer.

Ron LaBella

Ya can't argue logic.:D:thumbup:

My last was a Custom Crawford, $300+ and my trusty Nealy Aikuchi, somewhere between $300 and $350, also a yardsale Queen Serpentine with winterbottom bone scales.

100% of the time I have a G10 Caly 3 on me. It does anything I want an EDC to do. That's $100.00. I have also EDC'd a small Sebenza. That one was $270.00. So I guess that I'd go at least $270, but I'm currently at $100.

Well, the most I've ever paid for a knife was $400.00 dollars (yes, it was a Sebenza).
Luckily, I was able to get most of my money back ($325.00), and I learned a valuable lesson....in my opinion, no production folder is worth $300+ dollars.

I also once paid $140.00 dollars for a flat-grind, one-liner, G-10 Police.
And I wish that I had kept that one instead of trading it.

These days, I would be very hard pressed to pay over $150.00 for any knife.

Bought my little schrade from wal mart 4 years ago, open boxes and cut stuff everyday with it. Cost me about $20. Best $20 I ever spent.

I don't really see a dollar limit on one. I follow LaBella's suggestion and get the best I can afford and try to carry what I like. Steven
