What kind of folder do you carry?

Anyone pick up a spyderco native in rex121? I'm dying to hear opinions on it. Sounds like a real tedious sharpening session when the edge dwindles.
I have found my comfort zone in the fairly well balanced steels below and for me personally it looks like the juice just insn't worth the squeeze with Rex121. I'm sure some folks will think it's the bees knees, but I'm kinda at my "point of diminishing returns". I may be odd man out but I don't care for extremely high hardness steels that give up lots of sharpenability for longer edge holding and a loose some toughness.

These are in my "good to go" zone for my personal uses ... Cruwear, D3V, AEB-L, Nitro-V, 14C28N, S35VN, and I'm finding Magnacut seems to be settling in this group for me too. And there are a few others that I'm not listing that could fit in this general grouping of properties that cover my needs well.

I know I'm probably getting old and boring ... oh yeah get off my lawn.

I'm kind of in the same boat. I appreciate balanced traits and a steel that's easily sharpened. I Love 3v, AEB-L, and Cruwear.

The exception I've found is 15v in a folder. I'm really enjoying it on my pm2. It may be that I'm just starting to turn away from subjecting my folders to "hard use". I pretty much use a fixed blade (DEK1 or EDC1) for anything rough or abusive and I just keep my folder around as a clean knife. CPK is actually what caused me to ditch folders and primarily carry a fixed blade.

Only time I carry a folder alone is in the office at work b/c of "policies".

Seems to me like Rex 121 and even maxamet may be more trouble than they're worth. I do think it's cool that spyderco is always trying new steels though!

It sounds like rex121 might be too brittle, but what do I know

Spyderco has carved out a vertical within the knife community which caters to customers that want to explore the boundaries of knife steel. Just because they make a knife from a boutique steel does not mean it's versatile or even a good choice for an EDC. I love sharpening and experimenting with edge angles and in the past have thrived on trying new and different steels. I've gotten away from it a bit as of late mainly because I have other focuses. That said, I have been tempted to pick up a Sage in REX-121 to play with but IMO it's a bit cost prohibitive for an unproven steel in a vintage pattern.

Here's a couple more favorites.. I have almost switched exclusively to carrying OTF's because of their blade to weight and true one-handed use. I think the Hera II is one of the best recent combinations of those, combined with the new MT internals it's a winner.

The Medford On Belay is probably one of the best overbuilt folders on the market and definitely a sleeper.
