What kind of folder do you carry?

Damn! I just watched a few videos that show several hinderer folding knives with lockbars that fail from a light tap to the spine. Fail = the blade begins to close.

For a knife that costs that much, hard pass.

I think I'll just stick with my spydercos.
Alas, I never dove down the whole spine whack debate rabbit hole - it goes nowhere… but the last Hinderer I had was one of the Covid skinny skinner specials that was hand assembled by RH himself. I had it 10 minutes and the detent ball fell out of the lock bar insert. I actually felt it hit my shin and saw it on the floor. Boxed it all up and sent it back for a refund.

I haven't had any issues with the Hinderers I own.

(I did come across one that I think Rick accidentally messed up the temper on when he changed the profile on a blade from one shape to another. But that was not standard stock, it was a special run and most likely an anomaly.)

Check out the reply video from whitty whitty - who I 100% trust (one of the best shops around, IMHO):

Like with other luxury brands, there is some hate out there. Also, when you buy a used Hinderer, there's a good chance that the previous owner loosened the lock, because (s)he couldn't wait for the detent to break in.

Finally, I'm absolutely thrilled about the Auto I just got. Very safe lock, full Ti, brass washers, no thumb studs or flipper getting in the way, all around a _great_ knife. That would be the perfect first Hinderer, IMO, where it's allowed (like in Utah :) ).

I've had many Hinderers .... and a couple of disappointments (E. knows). But a failing lock was never an issue, and soft M390, 20CV or Magnacut was neither. They keep going.

I'm particularly pleased with this one in Magnacut. I had to cut something with some sand / grit embedded in it and I could feel it crunching as much as cutting. Their old s35vn would have been destroyed. The Magnacut shrugged it off with just some stopping.

We had some very fine diamond lapping paste at work that was past the material expire date (aerospace product, don't ask). So I have an old strop I loaded up with it, 0.5 micron stuff.

The edge is singing sharp again.

Yeah, I saw that video.

The reviewer I watched is one I trust as well and the knives weren't used, the locks weren't overlubed, etc. In addition to the videos I watched (there are several), there were lots of comments from people being disappointed with their own hinderer knives failing the same mild test.

The "hate" for luxury brands you're referring to usually comes from people that can't afford said brand. If anything, my experience has been that people who have already bought the expensive item are unwilling to acknowledge faults, defects etc. with their purchase.

I also don't like Rick Hinderer's attitude and response to the situation. Makes it easy for me to decide not to buy Hinderer folders. That's the great thing about an open market; you vote/voice your opinion with your wallet.

I have this inbound from Josh at REK Knives REK Knives as I type! It’s the first (prototype) Shaman re-blade in S90V. I supplied the donor and scales from another project so not sure if I am going to keep these scales on it or not, was thinking going the Sha-Benza route.
