Wow, looking at what some of you guys keep by your beds I`m assuming no women ever enter those bedrooms...at least none I`d ever want to meet or piss off :p

That being said: Surefire 6p defender, and a louisville slugger.

Usually whatever folder I carried that day. But if it's on my nightstand, it's because I was lazy and dropped it there at the end of the day, not because I expect to have to grab it in the middle of the night under duress. I have other, far better options for that sort of scenario.

If you feel it compelled to keep a knife (or a gun) by your bed, you should reconsider the circumstances and parameters of your life.

However: I do understand that past life experiences can alter one' perception of daily risk.

Our former Marine son fought in Fallujah in 2004. Out now and mrried with kids, they live in a gated community in a "good" part of town, but he does a perimeter check of windows and doors every night and keeps a Beretta 92 in a lock box on this nightstand.

A friend of mine is a former Marine who fought during the Tet Offensive at Hue in 1968. He pretty much does the same thing, but from a powered wheel chair. His bedside piece is a 1911.

So I do "get it" . . .but still . . .

My personal opinion is: A knife beside the bed for self defense in the event of an intruder requires a much closer distance for effectiveness than my emergency plan would call for. My “plan” would be to not allow anyone to get within knife distance. If they are that close, you have a serious gap in your home security plan.
If I were in a restrictive environment, there are other weapons I would pick over a knife. The knife for self protection is a last ditch “get off me weapon” in my lineup.

When I get home from work I dump my pocket contents and my hat onto the dresser. So you could say the knives by my bed are a Case Stockman and a Cold Steel Air Lite. They’re not there for protection. Just a handy place to leave them until I leave again same with my wallet, keys, change, and nail clippers.

Time to go reconsider the circumstances of my life

Close to bed?
Well, a flashlight if I need to go piss in the middle of the night (too much beer sometimes).
Othervise, in our neighborhood I can leave my front door unlock day and night.... so no need to self defence and to have weapons on the reach of my hand.
I do carry a knife at work to cut whatever I need to cut.

In my early twenties, I lived in a dive apartment in a college town 7 hours away. Got robbed. Thankfully I wasn't home. They stole my 2 week old Playstation 2 and all the games, controllers, etc. I had just gotten it for Christmas. I've been paranoid ever since.

I check the doors and locks every morning before I leave for work, and every night before bed, and whenever I am passing by. My house is NEVER unlocked. Pisses my mother off, but I don't care. I live at home, as many of y'all know I moved home when I got sick with liver failure.

I sleep with a knife case on top of the end table next to my bed. Before I go to sleep I pick out the next day's carry and it sits there with my water bottle, wallet, etc. 2 feet from my bed is a gun cabinet with enough guns and ammo to defend a commune. Good thing I'm not David Koresh. There is a pistol downstairs in the family room/workshop/laundry room garage area in a pistol safe, and there is a pistol in my car's glovebox when I'm not carrying it.

When I lived alone I kept a pistol on the nightstand and a shotgun under the bed. Had another pistol in the kitchen and my M1 carbine under the couch.

Yeah I'm a functioning psycho.

Something with a blade length of approx. 4". But officially, nothing, because if I had to use it for self-defense, it would not be the use of an improvised weapon, but a pre-planned one. On top of everything, armed self-defense is not accepted here. In a self-defense situation, the force used must be in proportion to the situation, i.e. not "Make my day" or "stand your ground"
