Now for a dissenting viewpoint:
I bought one knife rag, 'Tactical Knives,' the March, 1999 issue. On page 6 there is an editorial explaining that they don't publish reviews of knives that they find to be substandard. They really don't give a good reason for this, referring to the firearms publications who allegedly state, 'Watch for the guns we don't cover because there is a reason.'
Well, this was enough for me. I expect better from an allegedly independent review source, especially in this era of enlightened consumer advocacy. If they get a knife that turns out to be a clunker, THEY SHOULD SAY SO. Negative information is just as valuable, if not more so, than positive information.
I have no objection to anyone reading whatever they want; if it gives them pleasure to read only positive reviews, that is their prerogative. I simply think that is somewhat misleading for the readers, who might easily think that if a substandard product is discovered, they would be advised of this fact, rather than have it covered up. Perhaps some brave publisher will someday start a periodical along the lines of 'Consumer Reports' or 'Gun Tests,' and provide unbiased information regarding all items tested. I certainly hope so.
