What knife to buy my son ( who just made Eagle rank!!)

I would get him a Benchmade 710D2 or a Benchmade mini Rukus. Congrats on your son's achievement.

How about a custom knife?

Check out the maker's section here on BF. There are many small to medium fixed blades over there in your price range.

I would put a few bucks aside for a nice engraving with his name, BSA, Eagle Scout, and the date. I woulda been thrilled to get a nice custom when I made Eagle Scout!

If you don't see what you want over there, contact one of us directly, or wait a few days and check again!

Good luck and congrats!
Scott

Good idea. There are lots of great deals to be had in the makers' "for sale" forum. I've picked up some nice pieces there, at very nice prices.

What type of knives does your boy like?

If he's the traditional type I'd go with a high end stout folder like a S&M or AG Russell, maybe dressed up with engraved bolsters and monogram.

Perhaps a custom Buck 110 if something heavier is wanted.

:).

150 you say? You are a generous parent indeed!

How about a fixed blade? Can't go wrong with a Bark River, big choice and first rate finish too. Moreover, you can get nice ones under 150 and have change left for a good lockback or sodbuster too....Barkies will last I believe,a lifetime probably!

I gotta agree with the guys who said a custom.
First off,Eagle Scout ia a MAJOR accomplishment.I would think, that if you were willing to go $150,a small fixed custom, may cost you a few more dollars, but will be of heirloom quality, and will last a lifetime, and could be passed on.
You could get a small Charles May,set up to carry in the pocket
Check out the ironwood handle knives in this thread

Of course there is a wait time, but Spydo's and Benchmades, yeah, they are great knives, but anyone can have one of those. This is an event in his life that warrants something a bit over the top.
Just MO,Vince

-Steel handled spyderco with appropriate engraving.
Spyderco Ocelot or Paramilitary
Benchmade 740 or 745?

If he's more into traditional blades, then the AG Russel scout knife would be great.

Fixed-blades:

Swamp Rat Howling Rat
Something from Bark River, like a Highland Special
Tom Krein TK3 (may be a bit outside of the budget)

yea if he has a camillus scout, go to a fixed blade next. they compliment each other, and hell have a useful rig, for when he goes camping, or even becomes a leader, and starts to train other younger scouts in the future. Youre pretty much dead in the water, without a good tool out in the weeds. a decent 4,5 or 6" fixed blade will do him good.

I also would buy him a knife made by Charles May. I have several from him and more coming.
Just my .02 cents
Vance

Congratulations to your son. A lot of hard work goes into obtaining the rank of Eagle.

Getting a custom knife just for him just for this occasion may be worth looking into. Unless you'd prefer this to be a surprise, I'd suggest talking to your son about it to see what he would like. He may have ideas of his own, such as if he'd rather have a fixed blade over a folder. There are many knife makers who would be happy to make him a custom and they would be able to personalize it for him. Have him look at the Knife Makers For Sale threads to get an idea of the work the custom makers can do.

I like the idea of a fixed blade to compliment the folders that he's already used to. Something like an F1 or a Fox River, maybe with a nice engraving...

congrats!!!

i agree with sticking to american made. just sort of makes sense for this purpose.

i also think, in addition to the knife, you should throw in the camillus eagle scout "classic SAKy thing" just cuz... it makes sense for this purpose

give him 2 knives! why not? you only become an eagle once.

I still have mine (camillus), when people inquire about it, it gives me a good excuse to tell them im an Eagle :p

As an Eagle Scout and soldier, I'd probably point him in the direction of something well made, yet cool looking to carry (for an 18 year old)

My suggestions are a Lone Wolf Harsey T2 in S30V or an Emerson CQC7 with serrations.

He'll use the heck out the serrations camping, and both of those are just plain cool knives. A lot of Special Operations guys tend to agree... check pockets :)

I like the A.G. Russell Scout Knife idea.

Another great alternative would be to get him a Buck 110 from Buck's Custom Shoppe. You have choices of brass or nickle silver bolsters, scale material (different woods, real stag, elk horn, buffalo horn, pearl), and blade steel. I've got a few of them and they are really beautiful knives for a reasonable price. Buck will also engrave bolsters or blade. Think of it as a usable heirloom.

Good luck!

I am a scout currently working towards eagle. I agree with the engraved A.G Russell idea, but if he would use the knife for scouts i would stay away from fixed blades because even though they are not expressly forbidden the are strongly discouraged. Also a slipjoint may cause a problem because many troops are forbidding non lockbacks.Tactiacal knives tend to scare mant scout masters, not that a would pay attention to that anyway. If someone was going to get me a knife for getting eagle i would want an engraved tactical folder preferably from BM or an A.G Russell, but thats just my opinion.

(I really don't want to derail or hijack a thread, but is there a reason why the boy scouts discourage fixed blades? I'm not attempting to bash, but it would seem wise to get scouts used to something so ubiquitous in common bushcraft.)
