What knife to buy my son ( who just made Eagle rank!!)

Edit- I thought that you were talking about a gift knife

I think what I'm looking for is as the Buck Eagleknife ad states:

a special sort of keepsake, not just one that sits on a shelf and collects dust but one that may be carried and used on a daily basis for the rest of the Eagle’s life

WOW!! There is a dizzying array from which to choose - my head is spinning. When I get more time, I will do some serious researching. Thank you all for all of your input and well wishes!!

I think the Vic Farmer is a very functional but classy looking knife. If he carries a Rucksack in the woods, a Farmer (find a red one) would be a very nice non-woods knife. There is even a small section that can be engraved. You could also have custom scales put on any of the nylon/celluloid models. Stag would be really cool.

Very cool. Congrats to your son and his achievement. My son is also working towards Eagle. I've thought about getting him a stainless handled Spyderco, maybe a Native, with some engraving of his name, "Eagle Scout", date, etc... when that time comes.

For that price range get him something he will use for years get a Buck 110 or 112 custom. Have it engraved. There are several people around that will customize the Buck for a good price and make it unique. In time it will go up in value both in terms of worth and personal value.

Ok, I guess I have three suggestions for you. I am a Eagle scout as well, and these are all knives I would have loved to have gotten as a gift, especially at that time.

1) Buck Custom 110, as mentioned above. This would be a cool present, and you could sit down with him to decide what blade, scales, and all he would want. Engraving, fingergrooves, there are a lot of options. A bit cool being able to pick it out just like he wants, but waiting for it would be tough.

2) Benchmade mini-Rukus. Nice medium to large sized knife, a bit smaller handle than a 110, and I would have just thought this was a very cool knife when I was that age. With the axis lock and S30V blade it should hold up very well.

3) Dick Atkinson small folder. With a 2.5" blade and titanium handles I think these are the perfect EDC. Its like having a mini-sebenza. I honestly think this would be the best knife of these three for this occasion, mainly because I know it would have been very useful to me at that time, and still would be today. And its a custom knife and still fits in your price range.

Tell him congrats from us, and let us know what you decide. This really is a great achievement for him and i'm glad to see that you not only recognize that, but are willing and able to get him something that can help to demonstate how proud you are of his achievement.

Ask him what he knife wants, especially if he is a knife nut. He might want a Griptilian, which you can get, and then have enough money for another knife maybe a fixed blade? If he is an outdoors man then he would probably like a "general purpose" fixed blade. If he would like a knife to use everyday, then get him a folder.

That's a great achievement. I'm thinking a Spyderco CF BG42 Millie may be in order here.

I think that a Benchmade 960 would make a great gift. It is smallish but useable, light, attractive, made of great steel, disappears in the pocket and it just feels great in the hand.

It can also be had in red. Any of the SS Spydercos would look great with engraving.

Folders:
Spyderco Manix (full size or mini)
Al Mar Sere 2K
Ontario Hossum Retribution 2 or XM-1
Benchmade Skirmish or Ruckus

Fixed:

Bark River Aurora (excellent knife with a great sheath that has a loop for a firesteel) and an army model fire steel.
Ontario Rat-3
Swamp Rat Howling Rat LM
Byron Knives lightening strike 2

Congrats on the Eagle Scout...too many people have given up on scouting these days. I think it is a great American tradition that should not be forgotten.

It depends on what kind of knife he likes and whether he is going to use it or keep it as a commerative. I think a Sante Fe Stoneworks Spyderco, or any of the Case XX traditionals with expensive handles would make a great keepsake. Also, more expensive than you mentioned but William Henry makes some of the prettiest knives anywhere.

If he's going to use it I'd go with either a Spyderco Delica or an Emerson CqC-7 both of those are about the right size to be tough but not so large as to draw too much attention.

If he likes fixed blades for use get him a Ka-Bar, Becker C/U-7 or a TOPS Moccasin Ranger. Or for keeping a Case XX presentation bowie or Kodiak Hunter or a Camillus OVB Bowie.

Why not get him a Ritter Grip? It falls right into your budget. Its a classic, and you have the advatage of S30V.

I was looking at the A. G. Russell site and would recommend that you get him the Jigged Bone Boy Scout Knife and spend the rest of the money to get it engraved as NV suggested.

BTW, one of these days, I am going to break down and buy one of his Grandad's Toothpicks. I keep seeing them and wanting one.

Those toothpicks were made for us by Camillus. When they are gone, they are gone.

You could take him on a trip to New Graham so he could get to handle and choose the knife himself (very important I think, and you can do bonding) -- and find knives for yourself and future buys.

I don't think PA is very far away, but then again I haven't looked at a map in a long time :)

396 miles from here to New Graham....darn!! Still very tempted to go!!

If you have a daughter you could leave her to have fun with her mother (assuming... you're with the mother, and if no daughter then she can have some alone time), and then you and your son have some fun together.

yea there arent alot of decent knife places in PA, but i definately reccommend the rukus, cqc7 or BM grip

(I really don't want to derail or hijack a thread, but is there a reason why the boy scouts discourage fixed blades? I'm not attempting to bash, but it would seem wise to get scouts used to something so ubiquitous in common bushcraft.)

They do, and they don't. Officially, the line is that carrying "large" fixed blades is a bad idea- they have little use aside from cleaning fish. However, I've never known a camp that would have a problem with a Scout carrying one if they were responsible.

As for my pick for him, I'd say either the knife that inspired the original Scout FB- the Marble's Fieldcraft- or a premium traditional folder. The AGR Scout is an excellent knife, while Queen and S&M make superb ones as well.

Major congrats from me, too. Eagle class of 1997.
