What knife to buy my son ( who just made Eagle rank!!)

very cool, congrats to him (i too am an eagle scout). if you want to give him a knife that will not really annoy anyone in scouts stick to the folders (you probably already know that though since hes been in long enough to make eagle). kershaws and spydercos are always good espicaly for scouts.

if i had to chose a scout friendly knife personaly i would go with an assisted open from kershaw.

and to touch on the what is allowed. national "strongly discourages the use of large fixed blades" as prevouisly stated but many troops and councils have made stricter regs. if the blade is palm length and a folder it shouldnt cause any problems.

personaly i like sheath knives when i can carry them but folders seem to be more convient to carry. if he is doing a lot of canoe/kiaking or climbing id probably look towards sheath knives.

Man those custom Bucks look real sweet. But a easy access pocket clip and one handed opening, in an emergency, could make all the difference.

The list has narrowed to these:

Benchmade apparition
Emerson CQC7 Wave Tanto
A custom Buck
Benchmade Ruckus
or a Benchmade McHenry & Williams

I sorta like the apparition

The apparition is cool, but remember: he's going to USE this knife in the woods, and that fancy looking shiny steel is going to scratch up really, REALLY fast.

Glad to see the Emerson on the list. It's a really cool, user-friendly knife that looks even COOLER once it gets a little hard use.

I'm still pulling for that Lone Wolf D2, though! MAN that would've been a cool knife to have in Scouts. Seeing the eyes on the Scoutmasters after pushing the button and hearing it go THWACK! sure would've been awesome.

Got my son a Emerson CQC-7 Waved Tanto when he graduated from Marine Boot Camp, and had the blade engraved with his name and the Marine Eagle Globe and Anchor. He carries it ALL the time. The wave feature works great.
For a smaller, more EDC knife, a Kershaw Leek is nice. The Titanium ZDP-189 would be WAY COOL, and engravable.

Survey says............................ A mini Ruckus  was our final choice - with black blade and combo edge. Thank you all for your advise and well wishes!!!

I realize it is after the fact, but I'll mention it anyway. AG Russell has a scouts knife that is made for his company that uses 154CM blade steel. It comes in jigged bone or stag, and is the nicest looking scout knife I've laid my eyes on. It is called the AG Russell Premium Scout Knife.

Btw, I didn't read but the first few posts so it may be that this has already been mentioned. Also, my first thoughts went to the Mini Rukus, and I think you'll and he will be quite pleased!

I know this is really late, but I bought a Manix for my cousin when he made Eagle. After handling it a bit (and taking it to the engraver), I bought one for myself and had it engraved. The engraving on his truned out beautifully, with his name on one side and "Be Prepared" on the other, but mine got screwed up. Now I have to decide if this becomes and "emergency knife" to keep in the car...

At any rate, my cousin is 6'7" and not yet out of high school, so a big knife was appropriate.

Excellent choice on the Mini-rukus. I have a black blade plain edge model myself. This knife will soon be a classic like the 710.

FWIW, Case is now making the 'official' BSA knives. We just recieved the Eagle Scout knife, a blue bone stockman (CA8052). Item is on site now, pic up soon.
Congrats....md

Well... sorta. ;) They have license to use the BSA name, but as yet, I've not seen the 640045R (the classic 4-blade) with a Case stamp.

I'd go with either an AG Russell premium Scout or a Case Jr. Scout. ive got both and they are very, very nice knives.

Brian Yellowhorse did a series of Spyderco Enduras, Delicas, and Dragonflys that I think he called the Eagle series. Typical handcrafted Yellowhorse work with an Eagle enlayed in the stonework. I'm not sure if he still has any, but you could likely persuade him to make one up for you. You also occasionally see them floating around here or on Ebay. Great gift for an Eagle Scout.

Congratulation to you son and yourself.

As a Eagle scout myself I have to agree with a engraved AG Russell Premium Scout knife would be the way to go.
