What knife would you bring into the military?

My Buck 119, my Leatherman fuse, and my Victorinox Tinker would be what I have mailed to me after basic.

My dad chose his Buck 503 when he left for the US ARMY in 1978.

I'm more hard core of a knife nut than my dad is / was, so the 503 in his pocket was enough for him.

Rat 1/2, Tenacious, maybe a Mini Recon 1. Easily replaceable, will get most tasks done well enough and if it breaks I won't have to throw a fit. :D

Fixed blade: something simple, sturdy and functional, like the Eickhorn Wolverine. There are many that would fit the bill. I like my Ontario SP-42, too, but stainless would be preferable. A pile of Mora or similar work knives (Hultafors, Bahco Wrecking etc) would do most things just fine, and be semi expendable if I had to really abuse them. Just have a guard on it.
SAK: Victorinox Locksmith
Pliers tool: Leatherman Crunch, though I think I might carry some SAK and a small pair of pliers (either adjustable or locking) for the same weight. That way you could grip a small item to work on with the other tools, or grab a nut while tightening a screw.

Well if that's what they sell at PX/BX it must be good enough

And the military/pm2 seem like good options for a folder, or a griptilian
Yeah it is after you break it or lose it you can get another.

Very little knife use in the modern military. That's why the folks who've been there say things like a SAK or a multi-tool.

It is impossible to give a recommendation on just the "military". The needs of the individual soldier immensely vary depending on their branch, unit and MOS.

This. Infantry will have much different needs/wants compared to maintenance, or even a paper pusher etc. If we know what area you're in you'll find some better more specific advice for what you need personally.

I would have to agree with these options, they have been really solid for me and my uses. But, I haven't been on a deployment so take that with a grain of salt. Depending on what you want to use your knife/ multi tool for the spydercos especially make outstanding cutting tools but you'd be displeased with the result of trying to pry open a crate with one.

I’m active duty Army, in garrison I carry a black oxide Leatherman Wave and a folder. In the field I’ll also carry the Leatherman with either an ESEE 3,4 or Izula 1,2 or a PM2, ZT0350. Depending on length of exercise, weather or distance to be traveled on foot. Don’t let anyone borrow your good folder, you’d be shocked at what Soldiers will use a knife for.

Didn't encounter my first Leatherman multi-tool 'til after I was out of the military.

First thing I thought was "Damn, I wish I had this thing back when I was in the military".

Leatherman, probably the Wave.

I'm not in the military but I'd like to join. I'm thinking marines intelligence specialist.

But I am very interested in what you are all suggesting, everyone seems to be very keen on multitools. I have only recently gotten interested in knives, but I have very little money to spend on them atm so I only have a Victorinox Super Tinker.

I wasn't a serious knife collector when I was in the service. I always carried a Leatherman. I also typically carried a Western boot knife. It was double edged, and was like having two cheap knives. I left my few folders at home due to the dirt/sand. If I had been deployed into a war zone, I think I would have taken a fixed K-bar. If I was still in the military, I would take a few good, cheap knives for barter, or gifts. I would never take an expensive knife (>$100) on a deployment. Nice things tend to get misplaced, or grow legs during deployments.
