What knife would you bring into the military?

My wife (Army Reserve) was issued a Gerber MP-series multi-tool, or whatever the equivalent was at the time, when assigned to her unit after AIT. When she deployed, I gave her a Kershaw folder. As I recall, there was some restriction or other on fixed blade handle/sheath colors. When she got back, I gave her a Gerber Prodigy with "approved" green handle and digicam nylon sheath. Naturally, they then switched to multicam pattern uniforms . . .

Big deal; buy her a universal sheath in Multicam.

Problem solved.

I think if I were deployed I would want a Manix 2 back lock in my pocket along with a SAK or Leatherman of some sort. For a fixed blade I would want a Cold Steel SRK, but a Spyderco Aqua Salt would be okay, also. I was a medic, but we were always jumping or helicoptering into some very unlikely places a long way from civilization. I carried a modified Buck 103 and a Buck 110 with a Buck 501 in my pocket (there were no multitools back then) and I built shelters, opened cans, dug in the ground, and cut off boots with those knives. They never let me down. So, what I am saying, I would want a very tough and strong knife I could sharpen in the field that would not let me down in a survival situation.

Folder - Endura 4
Fixed - Being a Marine I'd roll with a Ka-Bar.
I would have to agree with scottyj. My KaBar Becker was my first survival knife. I've owned many since, but it is still one of my favorites. It is tougher than nails, small enough to pack anywhere, feels and performs just about like a compact hammer. Millions of uses. I didn't own the BK2 when l was an active duty Marine in Desert Storm but it would have been perfect for the environment.
