What knives do you think are not worth the cost?

Striders.

ugly designs (Lets take a triangle and put a blade on it)

ugly camo / tiger stripe paint jobs (or worse bead blast it, so it rusts faster)

lack of quality control (its O.K. though they are "hard-use Knives", there not meant to look pretty - per the fanboys)

I guess if I was a rich mall-ninja I might buy one. If I'm spending the kind of money that they cost I'll get a custom made for me.

Strider production fixed blades. I like their folders and some of their custom fixed stuff is very nice. But the production fixed blades seem like they can be easily made at a pretty low cost. As hard use tactical blades, they are in Busse price range territory (lower to mid range at least). I just don't see any reason to go with Strider production fixed blades over Busse or Fehrman outside of aesthetic preference and brand loyalty.

Even out here in the middle of nowhere, you pay 10% of that 'Benza for a basic sit-down meal comprised of maybe $3 worth of ingredients.

Life is short.

Exactly.

I don't see what everyone gets so upset about. If you don't like it( or it's out of our price range) Stick with what you like. Or can afford.

I love My Striders and Microtechs.

My Wife hates My Old Hummer. and thought it was way too much. I think it's the most beautiful car on the road.

Life is short. and no, I'm not a "Rich Mall ninja". I don't Drink or smoke.(green or tobacco) so in a month ( or a few weekends) I have the money to by the things I like that a lot of people I know do not. and I Like High end knives and fly rods.

1 night out to try to score is at least $200-300

Yes, you can get into Custom territory with a $400 Strider,CRK,Busse or Microtech. But most "true" customs are $500-1000, and up. I have a Few. Same Quality as the others. Like Mosiers designs a lot too. But to each his own I guess. Get a Mora and a hatchet and I'm sure you'll beable to do all the cutting chores a $400 job can do. But it's not as much fun;-)

Wrong, most true well known customs are that range. If you get an up and coming maker that hasn't been around for long but still makes beautifull stuff then you can easily do 50% of that price. And as an added bonus you'll be supporting someone new AND have a piece from "his early years". From before he got famous and had a 5 year waiting list.

And somehow they manage to get chumps to come out of the woodwork to pay top-dollar for said garbage.

It's comments like these that are going too far with one's opinion.. Just because YOU can't see spending that much on a Strider, doesn't put you in a position to judge others that do.

This isn't the only comment like this, of course. many Mall-ninja remarks too (I picture them in their basement apartment wearing their camos, judging others - but that doesn't make me any better than them by saying that, does it?). I just think it's funny how one judges a group of people by what they buy.. I've often found that those that can't afford put others down for their purchases.... Not pointing any fingers.

I really wouldn't consider myself, or others than own Striders, chumps. I have no problem at all with spending $400 to $2,500 on a Strider. I also have no problem spending between $500 and $2,000 on a William Henry. I do have a problem with spending $120 for a Cold Steel Ti-Lite.. I bought an aluminum handled one (MSRP $120) for $70 at a gun show. It wasn't worth that to me.

I had no problem spending $1,400 when I walked in to our local gun shop and saw a Kimber SIS Pro in stock, even when I could find one cheaper online but had to wait, nor do I have a problem spending $3,000 for a Wilson Professional and carrying either one daily (not safe queens, nor are my knives).

But, I can't justify $600 or more for a Glock. Great guns, but just not worth that much to ME. And yes, I've owned a couple of them.

Now, do I call Glock owners/carriers Mall Ninjas just because I don't like the guns?? I sure as hell do not.

I have almost $1,000 in Surefires. Well worth every single penny. $25 for a Maglite is ridiculous!

Sorry about that. To stay more on topic, here's mine... Cold Steel Ti-Lite - Not worth half of what they charge.

*EDIT I don't buy a $500 knife because it's twice the knife that the $250 model is. I buy it because it does the job and I like it, it feels right to me and I like the way it looks, etc...

There are many people that could never justify the $20,000 + more for a BMW 650 over a BMW 550 when they use the same engine, chassis and the 650 has 2 less doors... But then there's a good number that think it's worth every single penny more. It's all in perceived value, not the amount of money in material and labor.. I charge a lot more than most of the others in my area (still very cheap by national standards). I wouldn't say my work is 2 to 5 times better than the others, but my clients are more than willing to pay it. Again, perceived value.

My biggest gripe is imported knives in the $100-$200 price range. If I pay $150 for a knife I do not want it to say made in taiwan on it. (No offense to anyone from taiwan)

I also think a ton of Tops,Busse,Spyderco,Fallkniven,BRKT are overpriced.

Why would I do that" get a knife off line from an "up and coming Maker" When I can get EXACTLY what I want(And already know) consistently, whenever?

Whatever dude. I don't know what customs you're talking about. Yes, Maybe you can get a Custom Fixed blade from an unknown maker for 200?? wHo cares. I'm taking about the folders I like and choose to buy.

Here, For your viewing pleasure- all above 500. 100 plus pages. The first one I have in my hand right now. I like My SMF Better. Again to each his own.-http://www.arizonacustomknives.com/products/?id=9445

like I said, Get a Mora and a Hatchet and you'll be fine.

I can catch a trout with a stick and a line. But it's a lot more fun with $1000 set and GPS to mark my holes. All the gear to tie my own flies ect......

Don't understand the derogatory comments like "Rich mall Ninja". Well I do Understand the reasoning. it's Just inappropriate. and out of line.

Life is short. Whatever makes you happy go for it and rock on.

This Post has got me thinking, and looking. I'm Going to go a head and get a Strider SA and a Microtech Makora II. I'll Post pics OF MY "OVERPRICED RICH MALL NINJA" Knives in the appropriate section when they get here.

These same kind of posts are on Glock talk and other board about guns. I LOVE My Kimber and SIG P226 Blackhawk. And the same kind of derogatory comments are spewed there too. You Don't have to be a Moosad or ex חֲטִיבַת הַצַּנְחָנִים to like the nice gear. it's available to everyone in AMERICA, For now. so get what will please you.

Hey Sputnic,

When I was reading your last two posts, I thought I typed that stuff and just didn't remember! Similar thoughts 5 posts up ^

It's so refreshing to see someone else say those things...I mean every single thing that you said is right on.. I've got a Kimber SIS Pro and a Strider SNG cc on me right now....along with my Mont Blanc Carbon Rollerball.

Why do they have to put others down because of what they choose to buy? We should get together and compare our overpriced junk that won't work if we ever need it to! Because that's what people like us to do apparently.

Sorry if I upset anyone with the "Rich Mall Ninja" comment. It was not my intention to offend anyone, it’s just that I know 2 people (personally) that own striders. And both are the type that put down all other brands of knives along with being Wanntabe Navy Seals. This is just my personal experience.

Sorry

I personally didn't take offense to your particular statement. It's just this overall attitude of many that think they can judge others because of the things they buy.

I'm no Navy Seal, in any way. But, I'll sure as hell put a hurting on anyone that brings trouble to me... It won't be with my knife, though. I buy my knives....well, because I like them, but they're purchased more as tools than anything else.

I carry mostly the Strider or the Emerson CQC-8. It does not make me a mall ninja. I don't look or act anything like a mall ninja. I wear suits or nice clothes, often button down shirts. I'm a wedding photographer.

I know a number of guys at the gun range that carry Glocks and seem to do everything they can to be mall ninjas. I'm not going to call others that own Glocks mall ninjas because of these few guys.

It's almost like people see somebody spending a lot of money on their hobbies (ie., the things they enjoy) and there's something about that that pisses others off. So, it seems like they have to spoil the others excitement by telling them ho stupid their purchase was.

It's like how a lot of guys will see some SUPER-HOT girl and automatically call that girl's boyfriend a fag....or some other derogatory term when talking to their friends. It's almost like they're jealous or just something about it makes them slightly insecure. I see that same BS in the gun and knife forums.

That sucks. We should all be happy for each other here. We all share the same excitement over our new knives. We should be excited for others that are like us when they buy something that makes them happy......whether we think it's an overpriced mall-ninja, chump knife, or not.

Good for you. I was only replying to the comment that it's not possible to get a good custom for the same price that you can get a Strider for.

Whether you like striders or not...I don't give a rat's patootie.

I've stated what I think isn't worth the money FOR ME:

Knives that aren't customs or using expensive materials that cost more than $200.

If it's more than that price it'd better be something special material OR workmanship wise. I'm not ripping on any brand/maker. That's just what I think about knife prices.

I think Striders are overpriced, mall-ninja, chump knives, and I say that having owned (and sold) one. If I hadn't read the threads about the whole Strider/Dwyer (Burger/Poland) fiasco, I'd just say that I think Striders are overpriced, but since I did read up on the fiasco, I think Striders are overpriced, mall ninja, chump knives.

I think most Cold Steel knives, especially the 'higher end' ones, are overpriced, mall ninja, chump knives as well, as is, in my opinion, anything Dark Ops or Manits makes, markets, and sells.

Come on 3G, stop being so timid and politically correct, just bite the bullet..... and say what you really think !

Good job sneaking in a bunch of extra criteria

Caly 3 (VG-10) $99
Delica in (ZDP 189 no less) $85
Native III (VG-10) UNDER $60
Centofante 4 (VG-10) UNDER $60

And that's just the Spydercos, things get worse for you if I start looking at other brands.
The Caly 3 is pretty much the same as the UKPK at the same price point except with VG-10. The native and centofante are both in FRN with pinned construction, has low hollow grinds and VG10. The delica has a extremely low saber grind with FRN handles, yes it is in zdp189 but the saber grind will cut like crap so you'd be adding an extra 45bucks to krein it up for a FFG.

It seems like I'm in agreement with most of you. Cold Steel, SOG, TOPS, anything made in China/Japan/Taiwan that costs more than $150. I've never owned a Strider (and never will - I think they're ugly), so I can't comment on them.

You've got to love the new Spyderco Phoenix too. $300 MSRP for a 2-1/2" VG-10 blade. No thanks.

No argument there, and I'm a big fan of Spyderco! I think the Titanium frame is probably responsible for a majority of the price, but the price is ridiculous to be sure.

While we're at it, the Rock Lobster and the Leafstorm aren't exactly 'decently priced' in my opinion either.;)
