What lead you to Busse Combat Knives?

I was originally interested in Striders; I happened upon a thread that was your typical "which is better" debate. I was curious and looked at the Busse and Busse Company Store sites. Ordered a HOGSJTLE and it's been an addiction ever since. Keeping the majority of the Strider folders; at least until the Busse folder arrives:D .

That is an interesting one for sure.

I know - the responses were kind of interesting too when I asked that question. Not having owned anything fairly modern other than Randall's (everything else was WW II era Case, etc.) I didn't have anything to compare them to, and one guy said that no company would ever match Randall's stature, longevity, and commitment to customer, primarily he said because the knife industry "isn't as important anymore" to people in general, that they meant a lot more to us way back when Randall got started. I still remember that and laugh about it now....

I needed something to collect while I wait for my Randall order to be filled:D
Then I was hooked.............

The Right Fool. Jerry is the best fisher of men since Jesus.:foot:

I was at the Blade show in Atlanta the first year Swamp Rat came out. I was looking at the Busses and commented that they were a bit out of my budget. One of the Busse representatives said I should check out the booth next door, which I thought was kinda weird but it was SRKW and the knives were pretty cool too. Eric gave me the web address of the SRKW site, eventhough they weren't even up yet, and I eventually got a Howling Rat. After a few more Rats I graduated to Busse and got a TW in the first web offer. The usual madness with e-mailing Jerry for a chance at one of the 68 available. I've been picking out the Busses I like ever since up to the AK-47 but I told myself that I wouldn't make another Busse purchase until the FBM came out. Looks like the time has come so watch out at the trough, a really big M-Hog is coming through! I did get an INFI Paul's Rachet at Blade this year so I backslid a little bit.

I read an article in ASG and was intrigued by the perfomance of the Busse featured...I can't remember if it was the B9 or the BM:)

Afellow who worked at the local Gun Range had a Badger Attack, "cause he could not afford a Battle Mistress back then. He told me of all the benefits of Busse back then. Took me a couple of years but I finely got my first a natural outlaw E handle, the a Paul's Hatchet and an assault shaker...ordered some other's waited my "Two weeks" and the rest I will say is history...I have about 50 or so now...

Chris Janowsky, "Choosing th Right Survival Knife," American Survival Guide (July 1996) (I can't believe that I not only still have the magazine, but could even find the right issue):

"In the 25 years I've been testing equipment at WSI [World Survival Institute], there are only two survival knives I consider to be excellent, I've recently given them my endorsement. The two knives are a folding knife made by Benchmade called the Advanced Folding Combat Knife (A.F.C.K. - model # 800S), and the fixed blade Steel Heart II made by the Busse Combat Kinfe Co."

I read that when the magazine came out and kept an eye out for Busses. Some time after that, I read an article --also in American Survival Guide, IIRC--about a new knife called the "Battle Mistress," made from a new steel called "INFI." I ordered three knives (Battle Mistress, Steel Heart II and Badger Attack) at that time.

That was when I learned that a week is as a year to a Busse.

At the time, the Steel Heart II and the Badger Attack were still advertised as being made of some inferior steel--A2 or something, I think. By the time I got them, the switchover to INFI appeared to be complete.

When I finally got them a year or so later, Jerry called personally to apologize about the delay.

Someone had a story simular to mine. Ron Hood. Only I had his video series and he did some pretty amazing stuff with it. Then he had a killer write up on his site about it. Chopping turtle shells, cut down rain forests and it still maintained its razor edge.

Like lococmike I read a Ron Hood review of (I thinK) the BM in ASG and filed it away in memory. Last last year I went looking for some knives for my Eagle Scout nephews and remembered Busse. Found the site and this forum, listened awhile and jumped in w/ the Hell Razor. NO REGRETS!

Found it. Ron Hood, "Battle Mistress, A new knife made with special steel from Busse Combat Knives," American Survival Guide (March 1998). That's the article that finally prompted me to take the plunge.

Any chance of getting a scan of the article or text posted? Thanks.

Read reviews on the SHSH I think it was back int he 80's. Met Jerry at a Preparedness Expo in Indy in the late 90's. After having my blade fail during SERE Inst. School at Bragg around 1981 I'd always said I'd get the best tool I could afford but couldn't talk myself out of $247 for the SHSH. After coming back to the table SEVERAL times I was told that I ight as well just buy it since I was walking the soles off my boots anyway. Got the SH, then the SHBM, MS and of course the BA. Still have the SHBM and have had over 20 others over the years.
That's my story

I remember seeing those early Steel Heart ads ages ago and really wanted one but didn't have that kind of spare change back then. Didn't know much about custom blades back then but it was obvious these were something apart from all the others. Never got one those first generation SHSHs' but years later I scraped up enough for a BM-E. And so it went. The collection grew. Sometimes an old one's sold, sometimes a new one's added.
