Cheaper but if you have more fuel a zippo is a lot better

"Better" is a matter of opinion and your intended purpose.

I carry a lighter as a backup. It's a mini bic. I think I've had the same one for two years now.

My main source of fire/stove starting is a ferro rod. Small, lightweight, water proof, cheap, and lasts a long time.

I carry a bic in my pocket for my cigs, and a mini bic in my PSK for a backup for the 2 ferro rods im usually packin.

I personally prefer to carry one of these three:

"Weather-proof" butane lighter

Permanent match ala myal IIRC

Zippo

I really prefer the perm. match as it doesn't actually 'need' fuel. Next in line is the butane since it seems to leak less than the Zippo.

i carry an austrian army lighter i got at a gun show. it is similar to a zippo but it has alot more uses, because you can remove the flame part so it is like a candle.

Any reason you couldnt use MethylHydrate (methanol, methyl alcohol, ect) as Zippo fuel? I typically carry a Bic, but I've got one of those John-O hand warmers and a little beer can stove that both use alcohol.

I don't understand this, can you post a pic?

Skecthbag, you can use most anything in a Zippo...tell ya what...give me a few and I'll try it in mine.

Results..no such luck with 70% Iso Rubbing Alcohol, it's all I had laying around to test with. If I doused the wick and filled the resevoir it would flame up for a very brief time, but not long enough to start a fire...I am sure a stronger alcohol like MA would work plenty well...

BIC.

imo definitely the best bang for your buck and possibly just the best all around lighter.

i hate the cheap ones that come in different colors and that you can see through.crap.

For cigs, (yeah I know, I'm a piece of $hick for starting again, but I couldn't stand all the migraines) I carry a Colibri butane torch style lighter.

In the kit I carry a Bic style, because I noticed that that style lighter catches fatwood on fire a whole lot faster than my EDC lighter. -Matt-

splurge the extra $0.15 and buy a Scripto

Arent the scriptos the clicker style with no flint?

I prefer to carry a lighter with a flint in it so its still usefull when it runs out as a spark thrower. Those electric clicker ones are trash when they run out of fluid.

All gear I carry is multi use.

Most butane lighters you flick the wheel and hold down a tab that lets the butane out. Release the tab and the flame goes out. This is good if you hold the lighter in the normal vertical position. Turn it horizontal to light your stove or tinder and you thumb gets scorched. I found a lighter at one of these big truck stops that the whole back slides relative to the main part of the lighter to ignite it. Sort of light pushing your thumb across your forefinger with the lighter in between. The result is you light the lighter and hold open the flame from the lower half of the lighter. Your fingers are away from the flame so you can point it in any direction. They cost more ($2) but the quality and advantages are worth it to me.
