No you suck, you just reminded me that I need to order some paracord and will probably end up ordering a bunch of other stuff too :o

Hey, you are not alone there.:D

Doc, I do the same with my Zippo and the Ranger Bands. It surely does work. I actually first tried the bands because the evaporating fluid was causing a rather painful rash/burn on my leg through my pocket.

I wish Zippo would come out with some way of putting a rubber gasket in the lid somehow like the peanut lighters. My peanuts last forever in storage it seems.

Each has its pros and cons, just like everything else. The peanut can't stand up to wind like a Zippo, and a Zippo can't be thrown in you truck and be expected to work 6 weeks later.

Zippo, for reasons stated above.. Small can of fluid also resides in the BOB for Jon-E warmer, Zippo fuel, and instant Boy Scout when things really head south...

Try lighting a cigarette in a wind-whipped boat, in a nice cold rain, in the middle of a lake with one of those peanut or torch lighters... Let me know how it works for ya...

This is why I love this site. Three pages about lighters!:thumbup: My wife would just roll her eyes if I wanted to discuss the pros and cons of my lighters with her...:D:D

For me its the most basic one you can buy at the market. Which ever i got never failed on me. I dont smoke so end up keeping them for a few years. The only reason i replace them is that over time i use the fuel up. I use them more at work for heat shrink tubes.
My ferro rod is there just in case.

Ejes the only reason your wife wont talk to you about lighters is that women have more common sence then men do lol. Besides i think we have all dicided in some other thread that all of us are more on the wierd side.. No im not excluding my self as i been called much worse lol.

EDC Depot carries the peanuts as well.
Also neat knives, flashlights , spy capsules etc.
And they ship to Canada , (County Comm doesn't).

yeah, peanuts rock  i've got mine splitring-ed to my scibeer-modified SAK farmer in my pocket right now

the gasket failed on mine but i just replaced it with a fatter one which works great. usually takes a couple of tries to get it lit - but it's a great lighter for its size. refillable, reliable and doesn't leak

I use an adjustable lighter that I have modified to the largest setting. It is a back up - and if I need to use it - I want a FLAME - not some little crap.

Usually just carry a Bic lighter with me. Also always have a ferro rod of some sort, so the Bic is mostly backup, or for other things a lighter is more useful for.

Here are some of the lighters I carry. (not at the same time)

Zippo camper: The old standard, rugged, reliable but fuel evaporates over a short period of time. (about two weeks)

Bic: Cheap, reliable, light but can easily be damaged.

Austrian from County.com: Cheap, rugged, reliable and holds it fuel twice as long as the Zippo (three to four weeks)

Peanut from County.com: Cheap, rugged, ignition system could be frail but holds its fuel forever because of the rubber O ring seal.

Collibri Extreme: Expensive, rugged, really hot flame, great "coolness" factor but an absolute pain in the A@@. Tempermental, I have had to disassemble and clean mine twice. Will light up on the first try and then shut down for a short period of time.

I've had several Zippo's fail on me, and it's a pain to constantly have to refuel them. They also weight a lot. So I carry a simple Bic. Very light, never had one screw up (except when one ran out of fuel), reliable startup.

Spooky, please, I have to know. How can a Zippo fail?

Doc

Zippo for me every time. Top it up regularly, keep a couple of spare flints in the bottom.
Never fails.
Mind you I'm a smoker not a survivalist. For that I'd stick to Bic!

Bic for me,with a ferro rod as back up, still carry matches too but never use them, maybe to light a lantern. I think a bic is well worth it's space and price.

Fail might not be the right word as it implies breakage, but either the wick isn't taking a light (despite efforts) or the fuel evaporated too quickly, etc. Just seems more complicated and heavy than it's worth, compared to the bic. But that's just me, I know lots of folks who love em.

I have a couple nice zippos but since I am a nonsmoker they are always empty when I need them. Since i have been upgrading the EDC recently i have been checking out some nicer lighters and one of the most recommended by the cigar forums who really know their lighters is the not very expensive Ronson Jetlite.

They are available at some WallMarts in the US so i had a good buddy track one down for me and when it gets here I will give it a quickie review.

I also liked the more expensive Xikar who also make knives geared towards the cigar crowd.
