what lighter do you carry??

Bic, put it in your kit and year later it will still work, Zippo in the pocket for a few weeks and it won't, I'll take the Bic.

I got a couple of these at War 2008 and have one in my PSK and one in the car. Supposedly they have a long shelf life.

I carry ye ol' dependable Bic.

You can get more flame (but not adjust it down afterwards, by using a pin to widen the gas aperture.

These two items are in my front right pocket at all times. Lighter gets filled whenever I plan on going for even a short hike.

I also have a bic in my PSK, and a bic and Mora in each of our cars.

I carry all types. I have peanuts in my cars and my main pack as well as a bic. A Zippo usually accompanies me if I know I'm going to need a lighter and, therefore, I make sure it is filled beforehand.

austrian lighters from county comm

peanut lighters from same said web site.

i carry these...in no order or preferance

Zippo Classic
Ronson Butane Torch
cheap three flame from the cigar store
Austrian lighter
Peanut lighter ( and yes i have not filled it for almost a year...hang on...* unscrews lid and flicks it...it lit...for a few seconds then started to peter out*)

and A BIC

ferro rod
rei storm matches

usually the bic is a back up to the rods or matches and DEFINATLY to the other lighters.

i just started carrying a zippo a couple weeks ago...regular old standard model.

i carry spare fuel in a small spy capsule. i still need to get some spare flints before mine runs out.

i started carrying it because it is more windproof than a bic, can be held under tinder without the need to depress a gas release, can be set on a table and used like a candle, and i love the ring that it makes when you open it.

of course there is the fuel issue and i find that the flame tends to deform around fuel instead of lighting it as efficiently as a Bic. still works well enough for me to carry it though.

i EDC a lighter in my left front pocket, but when i'm in the woods i carry a ferro rod as backup. ferro rods work no matter what; wet, cold, broken, whatever. they aren't as convenient though so its my backup.

I really like Zippo's but you have to be religious in keeping them fed; the new County Comm peanut lighters are excellent and I just tried on out that's been sitting with my knives for the past few months and no loss of fuel.

Daily carry, I do have a small Windmill (refillable) butane lighter. It's light and has been very dependable for me. I've had one fail, so I know they're not infallible, but they work under most conditions and much easier to light my pipe when I'm in the mood. I almost always have a Bic not too far away.

I know they're a little expensive siguy, but they have those little Zippo fuel carriers for key chains (larger than a spy capsule) and they really do well. I've had lighter fluid in mine for well over two years and it's still completely full:eek: I was a pleasantly shocked as well:thumbup:

There's also those little "Permanent Matches" that use lighter fluid and you remove a wick on a striker and there's flint on the side...I've got one and it too has a good seal to keep the fluid from evaporating. Guess I need to take a picture of all these lighters:D

i couldn't agree with you more...thanks for the responses everyone!

I have one of the Austrian IMCO lighters langston302 mentioned on the way from County Comm as well. I'm anxious to see how it compares to the American Zippo. I remember my Dad had one when I was a kid that he brought back from Germany when he was stationed there during the Vietnam war. I always thought it had some better features, but the Zippo just fits in your pocket better.

I carry a plain old Zippo... BTW I just got one of those trick "looking" Brunton Firestorms... What a POS... Once again I got BURNED on another crappy torch lighter.
Will I ever learn?;-)

I carry a Mini-Bic daily, and a Zippo every now and then, out in the woods perhaps. My Black Ice Zippo needs new flint, though, and I haven't gotten to replacing it yet.

It doesn't IMHO. I've had one for 30+ years and the reason I've had it so long is because I don't use it.

Most of the time, I don't carry a lighter, but when I do, I carry a small Bic in a Bic case (it prevents the depresser from being depressed). In cold weather, I carry a Zippo as well. I find that if I keep a ranger band around the Zippo joint, the fuel lasts a long time. Besides, how much does a small tin of lighter fluid weigh?

Siguy made some good points with which I agree. Zippos aren't affected by cold weather (yes, I know you can carry your Bic under your armpit ) Another thing, and this is very survival relevant. If you're really cold and your fine motor skills are screwed, good luck with the Bic. With the Zippo, you can rub the lighter against your leg to open the lid and again to light the lighter, and you can do that with gloves on.

Rock, do you have a link to that fuel container on your keychain?

Doc

Edit to read, I also EDC a Doan block and I do bow drill and hand drill and every once in a while, I carry a 'Light My Fire' ferro rod and striker.

Thought I'd post a picture.

Zippo on the left with 1 ranger band sealing the joint between the lid and body to help prevent fuel evaporation, and a couple of extra ranger bands for tinder. Also, in cold weather, when I don't want to lose my lighter, it is well attached to me with the lanyard that you see.

To the right of that is the mini Bic in a Bic lighter case. I quite like this little set up.

Below that is the Austrian Imco lighter. I like the idea, but it doesn't light as well as the Zippo. I used to have 2 of these, until one day, the one I was carrying p***ed me off so badly, that I literally, threw it away. I even tried replacing the original wick with a Zippo wick thinking that would make a difference - not.

So summing up, warm weather, at least a Doan and possibly the mini Bic. In cold weather, Zippo, freshly fueled, with ranger band, Doan, Bic, and maybe the 'Light My Fire' ferro rod.

Cheap no name, adjustable flame and disposable. Been using them for 8 years or so and they havn't missed a beat. Running low, need to find s'more.

Just found it on Amazon, but you could probably find it cheaper searching around.

Zippo Fuel Canister

It also holds an extra flint which is nice. It's larger than a spy/pill capsule, but still small enough for the pocket or pack. It has three caps. First one is just the top for attaching to a fob; second is the sealed cap that when opened up reveals a small dropper tip so you don't waist fuel recharging your Zippo; last lid is for the main compartment to refill the whole thing.

I used to love Zippos but they leak and dry out too quickly.

Now i use peanut lighters (1 on the keychain, 1 in backpacking kit)
just like the one pictured above.
they are totally waterproof and i have one that i filled up 6 months ago, guess what? Just tried it and its still full!

Thanks Rock, I'll check into it. BTW, I keep a couple of extra flints under the thick bottom pad in the lighter.

th, I have a peanut lighter - actually mine is a bit larger and is flat on the bottom so it can sit by itself. They're ok, but I prefer the Zippo.
