What makes a fighting knife

So Seriousblade, I did my experiment and I got slightly mixed results. I tried thrusting and stabbing with a wooden kukri made for me by Bawanna. I set up my mattress with an inch thick foam pad, a dense one, underneath the sheets. At that point I tried thrusting and stabbing. I found that if one tries to stab with a kukri, you have to stab with the tip in line with the shoulder, and not in line with the handle. Attempting to stab in line with the handle will push your hand out towards the blade. Stabbing with the tip in line with the shoulder will not push your hand towards the blade, it will push the handle up into the web of your hand. It is also important to keep a firm grip on the handle, but that isn't a surprise.

So as for results, always stab with the tip in line with the shoulder, and not in line with the handle.

Thank you Scara for you experiment and for your advice, yes there must be difference between ways of holding khukuri, with variety of each moves and actions with it,i am not saying that you can not stab and succeed, each fight is individual and unique compared to other,i still favour rather slashing and chopping moves, rather than stabbing with khukuri....thats what these blades are doing best i think...Stabbing with them is of course possible, this capability will vary from model to model due to thickness, weight, curvature etc.

I still believe, that having no full guard on edged weapon may cost its owner serious injury, resulting in loss on life-in serious knife to knife, edge vs edge fight....

a light and curving blade is the best for fighting khukri style, any weapon needs to be light just because you will get very tired very quick if it is super heavy; and I think the curvature helps deliver a smoother cut drawing through the point of impact -- but mostly guessing there-- others know why it is better, -- also a smaller knife I think is best( short sword is a knife right?), because when you are that close you want to be able to move the blade where you want it without getting tangled up in random limbs.

IMO two types of fighting knife for blade shape are out there: slicers and stabbers. Rest are mixtures of the two.
I too think lighter and nimble knife is preferable. I remember someone was arguing that Junglass could be used for a fighter, and they were very adamant that a big person will be able to swing that knife easy...

I think 5-7" is optimal length.

Mr. Dickiss has one of those "Special knives" (by Sher?) - similar to a kukri, but a different handle and guard.

Need I say more:D

No argument, the kukri is a chopper first. It is an incredible chopper, both of wood and of... things. The kukri is fantastically effective in that role and the kukri is without a doubt my favorite kind of knife.

What about the new Chaos Kukri? Seems like you'd be able to stab with impunity. Also punch and pommel-whip whatever your hearts desire.

Yuck. The blade is off center from the guard. Better just send it to me so that I can send it back to the kamis with a stern letter...eventually;)

Simply gorgeous.

In honor of this thread, I'm packing my Spear Vala as my defensive blade tomorrow. I'm not a tough guy, but if I were a mugger and had a 2lb smatchet drawn on me...well, I'm not going to insult anyone here. We've all seen Crocodile Dundee;)

I've had a positive effect on this world. It's heart warming.

I have to agree with ya there Steely! If someone pulled a smatchet on me id hope it would be a joke cause my jaw would be dropped and an easy gut shot just because id be in frozen awe:eek:

If I come down and pull a smatchet on ya would you give me that bowie. Kind of a bowie for your life deal?

All this fighting knife talk is taking a toll on me, turning me angry and violent.

I love that bowie.

Bowie smatchet bowie smatchet bowie smatchet...I hope nobody ever makes me decide on that one! I couldnt do it. I really think we oughtta check and see if Bhakta could do a run of them. He could do it! I had a Knife my dad took in exchange for rent on a rent house when I was very young. I think it was like 1975 or so but i remember that knife so well. Dad called it a Bananna Knife and it was the same shape as the smatchet double edged but the entire blade was hand honed from edge all the way to the centerline and razor sharp. Completely convexed! It was spear pointed and had a guard and i forget what the handle was made of but sure did get my blood flowing. It got lost in the family somewhere and no one seems to know where it is? Mom prolly has it in her sock drawer or something and forgot about it? That still haunts me to this day. I NEED AN HI SMATCHET! That would help me feel better about the next 40 years:D

You were young in 1975. Son your still young if that's the case.

Words of wisdom from a codger, send me the bowie. It's the right thing to do, I know stuff.

It depends on whether we're talking "dueling knife", where both parties have a knife and neither shoots the other or runs away, or "fighting knife" where one party has a knife and is wishing he/she had brought more magazines (or friends) and the other party might have anything from nothing up to a kalashnikov. What I would choose for dueling is not what I would (or have) chosen for modern war.
Two different kinds of interpersonal crisis management here.

I hear ya on that one JW... Anyone wanting to duel me or "fight" must realize there will be a Kalashnikov in the fight.

I don't care if someone is wielding a knife or a stick, I was taught to meet any type of force with extreme force.

I got a ton of weapons to turn to but I consider my Kalashnikov my go to weapon. I have always thought of it as a freedom fighters weapon, or the underdog. I see AR's as the "authorities" weapons, but AK's will always be a freedom fighters best friend. I have one in the bedroom, one in the closet near the back door, and one behind the couch in the living room. I consider my Kalashnikovs my go to weapons whether someone comes at me with a knife or a bat or anything else. If I am out in public there will be either a 1911 or Glock 23 in the fight... but I always consider my AK as my primary arm.

This certainly has been an interesting thread. Truthfully I didn't expect there to be one answer, I expected a range of responses. That's certainly what I got. About the only things I can see in the thread is that we all like ergonomic handles, we like our blades to be at least reasonably sharp, and we like blades that don't break. It has been very interesting to see what different people have as preferences, and it seems bowies and smatchets are popular choices, as are kukris (big surprise).
