What makes a good SERE knife?

Hey JollyRoger - i have a friend who uses that moniker from time to time, has survival experience as well.

Are you living in Kentucky somewhere by chance?

It would be *very* interesting to bump into him here.... We've climbed together, camped together, etc but i didn't know of his affinity for knives...

My blackjack 14 is my main wilderness blade. The full tang 7.5" blade is one of the best all around designs for survival and fighting. I have used mine for wood work, hunting tasks and killing rattlesnakes.

JollyRoger3 would you please post a top view pic of your model 18 please. I would love to see how the teeth are shown form the top view.

Thanks,

Bryan

Bryan,
Absolutely can do for you. I will also attempt at getting a closer shot of the Maynard teeth too.

fmajor007- I am more than a few hundred miles north of Kentucky. Sorry brother.

Oh well - thanks all the same! I'd have been a little surprised in the event of same/same person. I've never asked him if he posted on any Boards/on-line communities (he's *really* busy with work stuff - holds 2 full-time gigs!).

Great knife all the same!

fmajor007- Sounds like your friend and I have a lot in common!

Bryan,

The pictures you requested. Not great quality but the best I can do. Hope they help you.

Funny you mention the Randall Model 18. It was designed and intended for such situations and fills that very specific roll well. I know many do not liek the idea of a hollow handle, but you can't argue with the fact that the Model 18 has been used since 1962 and has stood the test of time. It's not an indestructable x-caliber, no knife is, but it is strong as any knife should be. I have split wood, chopped shelter poles and butchered game with mine.

A true classic. Gotta love the Randall model 18.

Jolly R., where did you get that neat survival capsule to go in your Model 18's handle? I'd love to get one for my 18. By the way, the Randall Model 18 is part of the permanent design collection at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. Google the design history of the 18. It's a great story.

Sorry for the delayed answer to your question.

The capsule was standard equipment that came with a Marto-Brewer survival knife. I gave the knife away and kept the capsule. Very cool little piece of kit and fits perfect in the 18 handle.

I used a USAF Pilot's Survival Knife for a while at SERE. Then it broke. (The blade broke off from the tang right at the hand guard.)

After that, I pulled out my Becker BK-2 and never looked back. This is my perfect SERE knife. Then again, I don't regularly carry my BK-2 in my kit. So I guess my true survival knife would be a Vic Pioneer and a BM Griptilian (both are usually on me at work).

I just got a chance to play with a Breeden SERE- unusual design that quickly grew on me! I could be very happy depending on that style knife.

Bill

This is what I would take as my one now:

I cannot think much that it could not do for me(understanding it has no saw :) )

That is a super cool knife. I like that a lot. Very practical design. Someday I will have one of Mr. Breeden's knives, like that big Pot-belly knife in the other thread. Uber cool knife.

JollyRdoger3,
I am sorry, I muddied the water. The pic is of a Koyote LBK. Bryan's SERE is the bottom knife in his signature line. An excellent design as well. I am sending Bryan a drawing to have made when he gets caught up.
