What makes a good SERE knife?

well, I am going to try and get it to balance out in the middle. right now this blade blank weights in just under 3oz. according tomy scale. I am going to put on tan micarta handles with black or red liners.

Munky88, You hit the nail on the head. that is my plan anyways lol.

Well I got back over the shop and got the blank of the first drawing with the Maynard blade shape roughly.

Both of my blades are just a little wider than the Maynard blade. Well for now anyways lol.

Okay, you are going to make this difficult aren't you :)

I like them both very much, but now that I see the bottom pattern in steel, it speaks to me. It holds the simplicity and ethos of the original design.

I like the top one Bryan. It kinda reminds me of a Buck egro or something like that. The Bottom one is cool too but I am liking the cutout for the finger in the top one.But I don't think that you can go wrong with either one. Oh yea they both need a lanyard whole . Just my way of looking at them.
Good job Bryan.

Top one definitely !

I also agree. top one does it for me. I would like a lanyard hole but other than that just put your scary sharp edge on there and it's good to go :)

Well, I slept on it last night (yes, I actually sleep sometimes). My preference has not changed. Bottom one all the way.

Hi all,

Yea I like the top one better to. Some do not like guards or thumb ramps. I like to wrap my hand around the bottom guard with my pointer finger in the choil. I have not found a more secure grip than that. I also get right to the beginning of the edge for carving.

The slanted guard is what makes the design so special and key to the knives useful design. Even if the edge is up you can still wrap your pointer finger around the top guard and still hold the knife like not other knife I no of.

JollyRoger3, Glad to hear you still like the bottom knife after a nights sleep. You might change your mind after seeing a slanted guard knife in person though:D.

Bill, I think your blade shape looks cool on your drawing.

Grunt, they will have lanyard holes lol. I do not like a knife with out them.

When I get them both made up I will post a pic of them.

chat with you all later,

Bryan

5.5" for both. I wanted to stay with the blade length like the Pilots survival knife.

But like I have told others, If you are looking into getting a custom knife, get it your way.
wheather you want a longer blade or or shoter blade and the same goes with handle lengths and blade widths.

Chat with you later,

Bryan

I kind of think the bottom blade ( no choil ) with the top Handle . 5.5" is the best all around length. Ether way its going to be a cool knife.

Grunt, I will be making one in the next month or so with a 7" blade.

A slanted guard knive is going to the head fellow of the United States Rescue and Special Operations Group.
I got started on his slanted guard knife yesterday.

I will be putting the handles on the 2 knives that drew up designs for Wednesday. Well that is the plan lol.

Well if it doesn't have a owner yet and you need some dumb grunt to buy and beat the hell out of for testing purposes let me know good sir :)

Hmmm.... Sounds like a plan. Everyone design there own SERE knife, Bryan makes them all and sends them out for testing, we each buy our own and then have a poll to design the "official" BF SERE knife!!

Bryan,
I hope your shop sits on a firm foundation to hold the weight of all that steel!!!!!!! ;)

Hi all, I got the 2 knives from the drawings I did, done today.

Put Green Micarta handles on them with red liners.
In the next couple of weeks I will get them out in the woods and get some woods time with
them.

The slanted guard knife is my favorite of the 2 knives. they both have more rounded sides and are more hand filling than the Maynard knife. It has flat sides.

Here is the pic of them with the Maynard SERE knife.

Bill, Woa, wait everyone, Ok maybe not everyone, If that were to happen I would be behind in knife making for the rest of the my life:eek::D.
