What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

I have pulled some good ones before and used a knife improperly. Im very leary of handing a knife to a friend when doing something like you describe. They know how much I love my knives so they wouldnt abuse them. Sorry to hear of the damage.

On a similar note I used my Hay'n helper to cut debris out of my snow blower impeller and inavertently cut into the metal and did some small dings to the blade. It sharpened right out without too much fuss and is in full service again. GECs are tough!

Duncan, throw that little Rough Rider barlow jack I sent you in your pocket for lending out.
Even if someone messes up one of the blades, you still have two left, and it's only a $10 knife!

I allways have a "backup-backup"-knife in one of my pockets, if a "real friend" needs one ... to "kill" the blade :)

An elder Vic Pioneer or a Soldier; doesn't matter, if it's "dead" afterwards... i have a whole drawer of them, old knives from the flea markets arround the town. Just right for such cases!

Hey!! This is 100 pages for this thread!! Man what a journey!!
And of course it continues!!
Thanks to all the great contributors, positive and more critical, who are making this thread an ongoing adventure.
Of course, now I should give away a knife!!
Look for the new thread!! Happy 100th page!!

Let's be honest though, how many of us have put nicks into our own blades doing something daft. I have done it loads of times. It's inevitable when you use them everyday.

100 pages of barlows! That's pretty awesome. What I want to know is who here has 100 barlows? :D Post 'em if you got 'em.

Is there any other single traditional pattern that has created 100 pages of worship? "A barlow in every pocket, indeed!"

I did this just the other day. I was making a pile of shavings in my smoker to get a wood fire going with apple wood. I dinged the blade of my folder on the metal grill!

I've done it on a cup, on a plate, on the sink more than once.

Charlie, congrats on a fantastic thread. I have looked at this thread countless times!

Good advice Jeff, I usually carry at least a couple on me, but my other knife was in my Jacket pocket of which I removed before the heavy work! And thank you for that sweet little gift, it rides in my Car with a Barlow ( not a Charlow though ) believe it or not

Charlie - well done my friend and thank you - congrats on the ton as we would say here in good ol' NZ.

100 pages, think I'll sneak in another post :)

she's a PPP and proud of it, also with a good in progress patina I need a picture of :)

Congratulations on a century of Barlow adoration!

(It really doesn't look like that anymore!)

You don't see too many old bailed knives without dings in the blade where the blade has been snapped down on the bail.
