What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

I am thinking Walnut and smooth ivory bone.....hmmmm decisions decisions.

What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

This one does ;) My Clip blade Barlow put some finishing touches on my latest Walking Stick

No "hot spots" period, takes to whittling like a bee to honey :p

Charlie,
I really like the look of that walnut sheepsfoot Charlow. As you know, I'm not a fan of the Barlow bolsters, but this one almost makes me change my mind :D

Ok, so forgive the newbie question, but how does the African blackwood differ from the ebony that was done previously?

The Blackwood is usually much blacker than ebony, but there are exceptions. :)

Yep, it's black with very small pores, it's the stuff clarinettes and oboes etc are made off.

The African Black Wood seems to be a different kind of dark. I haven't had enough experience with black wood, but my SFO #85 seems to be a bit more uniform in it's overall darkness than my gabon and macassar ebonies. The wood feels like it is naturally more oily than the other woods as well. It has quickly become one of my favorite woods for knife covers.

You post and photo are making me seriously reconsider selling mine. I wish I could afford to keep one of each! The Charlows are very addictive! :D

I've never been much of a Barlow fan, but this pic put me over the edge! I gotta have one! Don't change your mind, burnside!

You my friend have a terrific collection---I certainly understand though when it comes to moving a few now and then.

As I've stated before in past posts this one I will not part with ;) Just seems to be that this is "the one" :)

Ug... Please don't rub it in LOL. If it is the one, well, now it 'WAS' the one. Todd is now the owner of a new Gabon 2 Blade Clip Charlow! My collection has now been narrowed down to just 4 Charlows (not including my Father's PPP Single Spearpoint)! Some sacrifices had to be made in anticipation of the newest run of Sheepfoot Charlows.

Todd, if this is your first Charlow, you sure are in for a treat! Fit and finish on this is super tight (has a very authoritative snap when opening), and the Gabon wood on this example looks perfect to me. The covers are a perfect match to each side as well. I know I'm going to regret letting this one go, but I feel confident it is going to a great owner

Yep, Jason, it's my first. Like I posted above, I never really even considered a Barlow until I saw Paul's picture above and the pics of yours in the Exchange. When I saw those, I just had to have a Charlow and only an ebony/clip/pen would do! I promise a loving home to yours. :)

That is exciting to hear! I think you are going to be fostering a new love for the Barlow pattern once you get your hands on this Charlow. Charlie really knows his stuff!

Todd, everything said about these Charlow's is so true!!! F&F is unreal, quality oozes from the knife---a real gem, congrats on this being your first Charlow

Jason, can't be said any better than that ;), but the pain will lessen the lose of this one with the new Sheepfoot or Sheepfoots :p

Here is my small photo contribution to this thread. Both are Case. The Daddy Barlow is a Tested period knife, the Razor/One-Arm with pen Barlow is a XX period piece. Both belonged to an old Masonic Brother of mine, Woody, who I love and respect very much. Woody treated me like a Grandson. He died a few years ago and I treasure these. I still carry them, too.
