What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

It's sad that I can't bring this Barlow on our 2-week cruise around England, Scotland, and Ireland next year (and Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris). They should have a locker for us to take these things onto shore excursions and then lock them back up when we board the ship, if they're afraid we'll terrorize the crew with our slipjoints.
You're not allowed a pocket knife aboard ship?! ☹️ That's crazy! 😡

Ohhh, it looks like the cruise line we are using this time does allow knives (Norwegian)! But Carnival and Royal Caribbean do not.

Knives: Most people wouldn’t think that you can pack a knife on a cruise. What’s surprising is that you actually can on some lines. For example, Carnival prohibits knives only over 4 inches long (about the width of an adult hand). (Update, Carnival has revised their policy. Knives are no longer allowed, even if under 4 inches. Dive knives are allowed, but must be held by the cruise line until checked out by the owner.)

Norwegian Cruise Lines allows knives with blades shorter than 4 inches. So if you have a pocket knife that you carry everywhere, you can actually bring it with you on the cruise. Just be sure that you aren’t flying to the port as they aren’t allowed on planes. (Be sure to double-check before you sail that the policy is still in place.)

Royal Caribbean, on the other hand, doesn’t not allow any sharp objects, including knives or any length.

We will have one big checked suitcase where I can store the knife on the plane, and then we will each take a rolling bag and backpack on the plane without any sharp objects.

That's good news, enjoy carrying your TEW Barlow, it sounds like a great trip 🙂 I'm flying at Christmas, and according to the airport, only knives over 3" are prohibited on flights, but I don't trust the Rent-a-cop security to know their own rules, so my knives will be going in my checked suitcase 👍

A few good, traditional barlows View attachment 2013379

Nice group, illustrates why we love collecting barlows so much, the endless variety of bolster stamps. you can spend 50 years collecting barlows and you will never find every variation that has been made over the centuries. It does get harder to find ones you don't have as the years go by but I just landed a bolster today I did not have so on to the search for the next one.
