What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Those are just stunning! Real professional work no doubt!

What was their original purpose I wonder? Sort of a regular-sized main blade but with speying ability?
A trailing point blade is too hazardous for speying! Might lead to inadvertent cutting of neighboring tissue!! A spey has a dull/flattened tip!
