What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

I think calling it Black Poisonwood will sell a boatload of knives!!
Imagine the fun!!:D

I agree, but, truth in labeling would prevent me from calling the wood black. Its actually the sap that turns black, so PoisonBlackSap Wood, or PBS for short, would meet my stringent requirements, that no one follows :-)

Why would I want a knife with Che Chen Rosewood handles? Convince me. ;)

Because Caribbean Wood with Poisonous Black Sap is too long. It is harder than Brazilian Rosewood, has colors like cocobolo and the name is not chinese. Its sometimes called Chechem, one word, or even Chechen, one word. The confusion with the Freedom loving descendants of the Basques in Southern Russia is caused by mistakenly breaking the word into two pieces Che Chen.

But you want some because then you will have one of the Single Clip Freedom Charlows, a name you can take credit for :-)

And to all the people asking where to get one of the new Barlows, send waynorth a private message.

no sheepfoot on the new ones coming out. how bout the spey?

I plan to get the single Spey and the two blade. Before my Sheepfoot Charlow, I never new how useful and sensible a sheepfoot blade could be. I suspect the Spey will be just as useful, although I don't own any livestock. ;)

Surprised the heck out of me!!

I thought it was photo-shopped! Turns out they are starting assembly next week, after the Forum knives (beautiful!!) are finished, and Bill completed and polished this one up to show us!

WOW-- do I love that single closed-blade profile, or what?!

(Rethinks ordering strategy.)

Nice surprise, on many levels. Thanks for posting that up, Charlie!

Oh man - you and me both Sarah!
That knife cant pack any more blade into its frame! -beautiful just beautiful!
Whats the choice of scales again Charlie?

Conversation with self: When was the last time you castrated any livestock? Answer: 36 years ago. What's your least favored blade nowadays? Answer: Spey. Which do you like more, multi or single bladed knives? Answer: Multi-bladed.

Yet there's something about the aesthetics of this knife that intrigues me. ;) :D

Looks very well done, Charlie. Congrats on what I'm sure will be another home run!

Whats the choice of scales again?

Ho HO, and what's this I see on GEC's production schedule?

Here they are, with asterisks (as per your clarifications):

* As of this writing, the spey barlows, single and double, will be clad in either ebony or blackwood, depending on which wood is available come coverin' time.

* The yellow option above should read, Smooth Yellow Bone.

If you want the Freedom Charlow in BlackPoisonSap Tree, (Che Chen Rosewood) your choice is the single Clip.

if anyone is wondering how to get one, contact waynorth

Duncan,

See this post above for the updated cover selection-- and note the asterisks (as of that posting, there were still a couple typos in GEC's listing).

In short: the spey-bladed Day's Work barlows, single- and double-bladed, will be available in blackwood (looks like? if not, then ebony), smooth yellow bone, and sawcut saddle brown bone.

The single clip, nail-nick barlows will be available in either smooth yellow bone or che chen rosewood. Hope this helps!

I had the same experience with my Sheepfoot Charlow, but I don't think I'll be getting a Spey, at least not a single blade. I rarely use the Spey on my trapper.

A refresher course in sawcut saddle brown bone:
