What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

I have one and it's a nice enough knife, but the blade is a tad big for my liking. Don't know how others feel about it.

redbike, that is a beautiful Barlow:thumbup: The blue covers are some of the nicest I have ever seen...I could stare into those like a campfire or like my wifes eye's even though they're green:p

Hello,

I see pictures of all these wonderful beautiful Barlow knives and I am impressed.

BUT have we not in fact lost sight of what the ORIGINAL Barlow knife actually was.

It was actually a very badly fitted and finished knife, although I must admit that it had a great blade and would cut with the best of them, it was also relatively cheap to buy.

I do not currently own a Barlow, but I sure as heck remember them from my younger days.

The word "Traditional" seems to have changed its meaning of late.

I am NOT looking for a fight, but I feel that we have lost perspective of the meaning of the word "Traditional".

I do not wish to offend anyone at all, and I also admire and appreciate the modern rendition of the Barlow.

Best wishes to All.

I think you might be thinking of the old cheap Imperials ,etc. and you are partially correct about them.

Maybe the better made ones were not available in your area, so you remember it that way.

But there were some very well made ones and to name a few - by Case and Schrade and Shapleigh - long long ago!!

The word Traditional does not mean poorly or cheaply made - at least not to me - and I have been around a while.

Go back to the beginning of the thread and read and look at the pictures and see if you feel the same way after. ;)

Wouldn't consider these "badly fitted or cheap" :D

I was eyeballing those on the auction site, but ended up getting a #15 instead. That was quite the collection that was getting split up, and you got two fine examples right there. Very nice knives.

Been wanting an older nice Case barlow for awhile and couldn't believe when that collection went up. They look like they've never seen any use or carry at all.
