What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Thanks for the pre-anniversary wishes folks!!

Rob, I think your knife is original (except for the Primblization!:D)

I have seen older knives that are mint. Any condition is possible with old knives. I have a couple that may have spent 70-80 years in a drawer!

A knife that is nice enough to share with future generations. Here's some of mine with those that belong to my kids…

Thank you for your assessment Charlie and I was thinking that the old Russell Barlow probably spent quite a bit of time in a drawer somewhere. I am very glad to have it.

I also meant to tell you how much I liked the artistry, which your wife so skillfully accomplished, of your two year old daughter.:thumbup::)

Mighty fine looking Russell Primble

Thank you Curtis, Duncan and everyone. An old Russell Barlow had eluded me for a long time, as well as a nice bone Primble Barlow. Another week or so goes by and now I suddenly have both.:thumbup::)

Sugarleaf - I got a great laugh out of your emotions, over that obscene group exposure that Duncan posted. Thou shalt not lust !!!:D:D

I feel a Primble TC Barlow group picture forth coming Duncan. As Paul has mentioned before, you seem to bring out my competitive spirit. ;):p

Pokerface - WOW - great collection shown and lucky children!

I came across a couple of knives at a small antiques fair I went to on Saturday. One was a small silver fruit knife I've posted in the Old Knives thread, the other was also Sheffield-made, with a single clip-point blade in well-patinaed carbon steel. It had rose-wood covers, and probably dated from the 1970's. The price was reasonable, and I would have snapped it up except for two things. It had the word 'Barlow' marked on the covers, which I always think makes a knife look rather cheap, but more importantly it didn't have a Barlow bolster! Odd knife, I almost wish I'd bought it just so I could post a pic!

What like this one?-I know what you mean- it just looks tawdry doesn't it ?
It's a Bexfield ,Sheffield. Other than that I know nothing.
I'll probably throw it away or use it for a sinker :o
Actually it's a mini beast and one of my first acquisitions.

Very similar Meako, except it only had one blade, was old and dirty, and with an even shorter bolster! I wish I'd bought it now, just so I could post a pic, it was only £6! :D

Here's Trevor Ablett's current Barlow:

I'm sure I've seen those short-bolstered Barlow wannabees before though.

Here's an Arthur Wright Barlow:

You'll note the similarity of the blades :)

Intermission - Just adding a pic of Tom Sawyer with his Barlow knife :)

Hooooo doggies, I like that Ablett!

Primble, that's a knockout for sure! I have one Russell-made barlow (actually it's an all metal Barlow/Boy's knife).
