What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

I do love this thread! Some amazing examples, thanks Charlie et al for doing so much to bring these to light:)

I hope it's ok to post up some comparison pic's of my two (rather more recent examples, the Northfield more so). I'm appreciating the subtle differences in the two clip designs bring too. I do wonder why the nail nick wasn't made a tad longer on the Northfield. I doesn't bother me too much but I'm curious....

One more gratuitous pic of the Northfield. I'm looking forward to this one mellowing too:)

I was wondering the same. I like the #77 very, very much, but the Clip on the #15 does look more elegant with that longer pull.

The Cut swedge, wrapping over the point or rise on the clip blade, is harder to achieve, and is considered a "luxury" detail worthy of a Northfield. Hence the long pull stops further back, to allow this to happen!
This is the most likely reason for the difference, IMO.

It's not subtle or anything - just a slip to keep your Pocket King (vs. Safe Queen!) from denting your coins!:D

Don't step on it though!

That is really neat Charlie. Whoever gets something like this in the mail (not me :() is going to cry tears of joy!

That's the first thing I thought!

Then I thought, "Wait... What if this is a hint?! What if Charlie is going to have blue bone Barlows to go with his blue suede sheath?!"

My imagination has too much caffeination.

Charlie, I love it! You told us there would be a surprise (not a button), but this is over the top. If I get one, I'm gonna name my knife "hound dog."

Thanks for the insight Charlie.

It's true what they say, you are the King;)

This exchange got me wonderin'...

The long pull on the 77 is only relatively shorter. That is, the 77 has a longer blade, so the long pull seems shorter. In fact, the long pull on my 77 Barlow is 27 mm. On my TC Barlow, the long pull measures 26 mm, and it is a clear difference. On my 2014 Bladeforums knife, the long pull also measures 27 mm. The blades on the 77s measure 67 mm in length. While on the 15 Barlow, the clip blade is only 61 mm in length.

So the long pull is longer on the 77, but with the longer blade, our eyes want to see it the same relative length as on the 15. If the long pull on the 77 was 28.6 mm in length, then the relative length would be equivalent.

Some enthusiasts are focused on the long pull. Others, like Waynorth, appreciate the swedge as well. Me, I love the long pull, but I prefer a well placed nail nick. :D
