What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Jack you are such a treasure in these parts my friend - awesome stuff, I have been bogged down with work too much lately and really missed the Forums! - its great to see this.

I certainly can relate to that, Duncan; for the past couple of months, work has really been restricting my "knife life". :( I'm glad you had some time to drop in today! :)

Thanks Duncan, you're a great friend and it's good to see you here. Do you remember when we were in Sheffield, walking across that cobbled square in the oldest part of town (I think you took some pics)? The small road that we crossed at the top of the square, behind the Cathedral, is Campo Lane, and we were only about 100 yards from where old Obadiah Barlow lived and plied his trade :)

I think I spotted the TC shipment on I-75 today! :D

Duncan and Jack - I am completely envious! You were both treading near hallowed ground!!

How about this Barlow? Fit for a King??
:D

It is sort of a dichotomy - a sturdy, working man's knife, all dressed up in Pearl!!

The snap is thunderous - a no-nonsense knife!

The glazed blades and Royal Blue set the pearl off nicely, and state, "Don't Tread on Me!!"

:D:D

Oops! The truck came by while I was writing this post up! Good TC spotting, Philllll:thumbup::)

Ken did ya right on that one, Charlie! Is this a new one you had him make or have you had it a while?

It is early work from Ken, Perry. I've had it for a few years. It was a very nice gift/trade deal.

I was wondering if Ebony would have been considered exotic on a traditional barlow?

Ebony is so common on older knives, I think it was more a sort of "workhorse" choice. Tough, long lasting, plain. It required less preparation than bone or Stag.

There's a lot of fire in that pearly barlow, looks great with the blue suede sheath too!
Almost half of my earliest folders are in ebony. The other half are jigbone.

Very nice looking Barlow Charlie. I sure like your S&M Pearl Teardrop 1 of 1 that I got from Don. Can't go wrong with Pearl.

Ron, that was the finest pearl you could buy at the time!
I remember that deal well. You have a one of a kind HJ!!
Can you post a pic?

Here are the two Cattaraugus Rosewood barlows I made for Mike an Derrick. The funny thing about the Cattaraugus rosewood, is that after years of sitting in the old factory, the scales became much darker, so as I haft them down on the handles, I expose some of the inner grain and color of the wood. Oddly enough, these scales hafted down to match each other, but on opposite knives! The pile side on one, matches the mark side on the other, and vice versa! Hence, their nicknames: Yin and Yang

Hopefully I'll be able to snag a pic of the three I have finished before I ship 'em out tomorrow!

After spending so much time drooling and lusting over the gorgeous TC barlows posted in this and other threads, I finally have one on its way to me! Snagged a single sheepsfoot in tan jigged bone and felt a celebratory drink was in order. To stay germane to the thread, another good lookin' barlow has been added for your viewing pleasure.

Looks like you are in fine shape to wait for the mail! Maybe while you're waiting, you could shoot us a closeup of that fine lookin' Northfield!

I love the wide profile of that sheepfoot blade!

Mike and Derrick are going to be thrilled with the outcome, I know I would be! Excellent work, Evan!!
Perry

I like that you had them etched on the pile side of the blade, that's a really great idea Evan! Why did you decide to do that? And am I right in assuming it's fairly uncommon, I can't recall ever owning a knife like that.

Was lucky enough to grab a duel blade in palo santo wood! Feel very lucky, can't wait to post a picture. Would love to obtain a single blade, felt so rushed to grab one I clicked the first I saw : )
