What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

I think you may be right! :D You'll note that the scimitar Barlows in the photo above don't have nail-nicks (they hadn't come along yet!), and the shape of the blade allowed it to be grasped without one.

I really like the pistol-shaped handles on the knives shown in the illustration, which kept the point of the knife covered as wear of the spring, and of the blade, caused the point of the blade to rise within the frame. Lovely big 'top hat' kicks added further to the knife's longevity :)
Jack, I've noticed that a lot of real "working" knives such as Barlows, Hawkbills, Rope Knives, etc. tend to have either very large tangs be it "top hat" or whatever to allow for a lot of blade and spring wear. Do you find that to be true?

Definitely a common feature on older knives Bob

I am learning so much from this thread this week. Thanks to Jack and others! Great resources and Q&A.

I am very jealous of this knife. Stunner.

^^^ I'd love to have that one in my collection, too! But maybe it's really ugly and Rob just makes it look good.....Nah!! It's a class act.

Nice pair Rob,love the glow the old bone takes on.

Barry, nice red bone. The Case red bones are some of my favorites. I've shown my mint ones but here are my users, early 60's.

Nice Barlows, Augie. I normally don't go for the big ones, but yours is gorgeous. I think the users take on a character that transcends the original design.

I really love Red Bone. Beauts - those two Augie.

Barry - that Case is stunning- finding the right light or time of the day to bring out the REAL tones can be hard at times- but you got it in that shot my friend.

Nice pair of oldies Primble. Love that old Bone.

Thanks, Charlie! Just messing around with Jack's research on the Furness lineage. Man the guys posts some cool rabbit hole links:D;) I love the integral bolsters on this barlow. I know you have a few....are the all made that way?
