What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

And here I thought the "Smith's Key" was a reference for smiths. (I want the one that's vertical on the catalog page- 399A?)

At some point, I'll try and post all the knife pages in the appropriate sticky

Thanks for the additional info, Jack. :) The full title is something that does not roll trippingly off the tongue, and I doubt if I'll commit it to memory, but it's very interesting nonetheless! Are the blades on models 325 and 327 19th century clip blades?

Yes, you can see why it is usually shortened! :D Published in 1816 GT

FYI, there will be some new Barlows in the coming year!!
We certainly will have another Ancient, and I have another "Stew's Blade" to make, to finish the series.
Right now, I have a few knives in the works that are not Barlows. I don't want to jinx them by describing them too soon, but I think you all will be pleasantly surprised!

:)

Thanksgiving action shot! :D

Among the many things I am thankful for today, the Barlows Charlie & GEC have brought to us have invigorated my knife collecting interests. I'm looking forward to many more!

Carrying my number one today; a knife I am very thankful to own that is representative of a collection I'm thankful to have.

I am thankful for all you folks who share my passion for Barlows!!
I live in Canada, but grew up in Buffalo, NY! I will have some turkey today, even though the Thanksgiving up here was a while back (October 12th). "Where would we be without our traditions?"*

Wonderful Gus, I am also carrying my first today, from the great man himself :)

I had to read that aloud, with the accent, Charlie! :D

Check your PMs, and let me know about Smith's Key my friend

NO!!

There will be more! I wanted to complete the "set" of the most common traditional blades through the 1900s; the Spear, Clip, Sheepfoot, Spey and One-hand blades. The first series were in Saw-cut bone, the second were in jigged bone (ongoing).
The variation of the Ancient was a little side trip, of which there may be a few more. I don't want there to be so many variations that collecting a complete set is onerous, but I want everybody who wants a Barlow to be able to get one eventually.
I do not intend to repeat the ones I have done, to protect the collectors who have taken the ride with me and supported our mutual habits, but it will be time soon to make a continuous run of Barlows that are easier to obtain. The next year or two maybe - gotta dream about them for a while!

That sounds great! Maybe some Spear with long notch:rolleyes:?
Although I'm thankful to call this my own...

Your message box is full, Jack! I tried to answer you yesterday!

Those are nice ones, Lloyd - Dancing a Jig!
Happy Thanksgiving to you too!

Likewise Dean :) The TC barlows were definitely a big interest for me when I first started.
Pulled this one out the other day, my only barlow and my favourite due to who it came from, the story behind the walnut and the design itself.

Thanks Charlie! I love the Jigging on these and the 2015 TC in Antique Yellow and Tan Jig Bone ain't bad either (smiling). Would love to see a Sheep Foot single and double in the Rust Red Jig Bone! Lloyd

Great news through and through.

Also, beautiful pictures recently here.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving, I sure did, hosted my parents who luckily are still in my life. Dad is approaching 90 and Mom is mid 80's. I feel blessed that they are still around. They just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

So as far as Barlow content, how about a Queen that you can tune a skate with? Picked this one up awhile back and never took pictures. Really is a beautiful Barlow, really sharp spear blade and a screwdriver blade with skate key. Probably will never use the skate key, don't think my old fat ass would last very long on a pair of skates:)

Had to include a picture of Mabel again, if I'm outside shooting pics she has to get involved, I'm afraid she is going to step on one of the knives one day and hurt herself, she was getting pretty close to the Queen and it is sharp.
