What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

My collecting focus has been to gather one of each Buck SFO, that has never changed. However, because of this thread I also find that I love Barlows in general, and the TC Barlow especially. Unfortunately, just when I found a TC to go after this little rare jewel cropped up so I made an executive decision to temporarily forego my quest for the TC and dug down and bought this:
1995 SFO Buck #332 Barlow in Black Sawcut Delrin, (the twin to my yellow one posted here earlier), this one NIB w/ papers. Other than the uber-rare bone handled version(s), I now have all the Buck Barlows. After I recover from this rather substantial purchase I'll be on the hunt for an elusive TC, but not today.

That's a nice find. I didn't know Buck ever made a Barlow.

This Robeson showed up this week. It's the only spearpoint Barlow I have, (at the moment.)

Congrats on your 1st!! Nothing quite like getting a TC

Thank you very much Mr. Drew, but apart from being very rare, to get them to Portugal is very expensive, the total price of this (with value paid at customs) was 270 € !!!! Very expensive indeed.

What really makes a Barlow strong is a long bolster. Properly manufactured, the longer bolster appears to have a reinforcing effect, preventing the body of the pocket knife from torquing under the force, twisting the slip joint during whittling. I believe that this is what fueled the legend of the Barlow's strength, and ultimately, its popularity.

Sonny14, GREAT Buck Barlow:cool:

Ironbut, A GREAT Robeson Barlow as well:thumbup:

I actually carried these two today and to think of it I can't ever recall carrying two Barlows at once:o:thumbup:

- Beautiful TCs, Paul. How did you carry the two of them - separate pockets or in a slip? I'm just curious as I'm sort of all over the place in how I wind up carrying my knives.

- Great Robeson/Queen, Ironbut. I have a couple of them, and they're really nice. Luxurious walk and talk on those.

- Great looking Buck, Sonny. I didn't know they did barlows either. Looks like a cool clip shape with plenty of belly.

Thank you John, the Sheep/Pen rode loose in left front pocket and the Clip in a slip in right front pocket with aaa Maratac flashlight.

I normally carry a jack knife in left front pocket and an ALOX Pioneer in a horizontal belt sheath. Not sure what prompted the change but it was enjoyable:)

Thanks for the info, Paul. I've been trying out slips and whatnot and am trying to establish a more routine edc setup.

Thanks, Captain O, Paul & John. I recently renewed my interest in Barlows after about 60 years of carrying other patterns & once again, there's always one in my pocket.

Paul is that stitchless sheath still alive ?
It must be just about due for a factory replacement by now :)

Got a question for you ?
I dont own any Barlow's but I know a few that do , how big are they compared to for example a pioneer SAK or Farmer SAK ?
Will a Barlow fit into the same pocket slip as an Alox SAK , if not is it longer - Shorter - thicker ?

I'm not Paul, but I can give you a comparison. I have an Alox Cadet & my single blade #15 Barlow is 1/8" longer. My #77 is about 3/8" longer than the Cadet. Both Barlows are thicker by the width of a handle slab or approx 1/8".

I didn't get out the calipers, so those aren't precise measurements, but it'll give you a ballpark idea of the size difference.

This isn't my first TC Barlow, but this is the first one that I have really fallen for. I really like the deep red color.

Very nice Paul! Those sure do look great together with covers of similar color. Those pony cut covers are really awesome :thumbup:

Ken, stichless is alive and very well. Just by comparing the inside of the stichless sheath, my single blade #15 TC Barlow fits just about the same as my Alox Pioneer. The Pioneer has no movement when in the sheath were the #15 TC has just a tiny bit of movement. My #77 Single Clip Northfield Barlow fits snug...not because of the thickness but because of the length, the button snap strap holds it securely.

Ken the #77 is 3 5/8 closed and the #15 is 3 1/2 closed. My Pioneer measure 7/16 thick and my single blade #15 Barlow is 7/16 thick at the butt and 5/16 thick mid body...this will differ with the cover material though. Feel free to shoot me a PM my friend and I'm back to the stichless on my belt...didn't even make it a full day;):o

Cscholl17, Thank you for the compliment:thumbup:

Travman, such a great Barlow and picture of it:cool:

But how to decide which one to pull out? Oh, the pain!
