What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

I like that. It looks like teak to me. Oily stuff, hard to glue, but it should hold up well as handle material. Beautiful!

Beautiful wood James! Well done, my friend!
Thanks guys! I had a piece of bocote laying around when Markesharp offered me a pile of knife parts and his help to assemble some knives from those parts. This barlow is my favorite of the bunch.

Nice barlows @Augie ,good variety too. I really like the clip and sheep's foot mains but just LOVE the spears!
How you managed to amass four fine knives like that in one week mystifies me. Please feel free to PM me any tips (anyone:)), I'm new to the game and could use a little help. I'm just coming to terms with the fact that I now buy more knives than I need:rolleyes:. I had always been the same knife for five or ten years kinda guy, but hangin' around here is wearin' me down:confused::D and I'm just about to crack!

Really love that battle ax Augie

Barlowssss. Two old, two new, two modern. No such thing as a bad barlow (probably). :)

Nice representative collection, Tomboy!! Right across the board!!
Thank ya, sir. *tips hat*

Do not know much about this Henckels yet , but initial impressions are good . F & F is impressive and the Stag is okay too . Stainless Clip though with brass liners & pins .

Oh geeze. I totally forgot I have that one, too! *facepalm* That was one of my first JA Henckels knives and one of my favorites. Mine's not as dark and textured as yours, though. Yours is lovely. :)

Thank you for the very kind words Tomboy . Is your blade Stainless or Carbon ??? It looks like it has a Patina on it . Do you have some idea of the age of ours ???? BTW : There is nothing wrong with your Stag either .

Harry, I was hoping I'd eventually see more photos of your newly-acquired Henckels Barlow; thanks!! :) It's superb, and IMHO the stag is way beyond "okay"!! :D:thumbsup::thumbsup::cool:
And as an added bonus, I get to view photos of AlwaysTomboy's version of the knife, which is another total winner!!:cool::thumbsup::thumbsup: Thanksgiving Eve indeed! :D:D

There may be some who believe that an Old Cutler Barlow does not really belong in this thread . You may be correct , but I believe that the re-covering of the Stag on this one makes it one that does belong here . I have posted it in a couple of other threads and you may now know that I was gifted this absolutely beautiful Barlow by Paul Hilborn .
